"The Directors do not consider it desirable to have horse power, manual labor being quite as cheap at Burra." The first lot of mules for the Patent Copper Co. arrived at the Gulf (Port Wakefield) about the middle of July, 1853, but out of 180 shipped at Monte Video only 70 arrived alive in South Australia. The passage from America was an exceedingly rough one and the boat driven by gales right out of the ships' usual course.

15th October, 1851 — The chairman of Directors reported that everything W£s going along satisfactorily at mine, both quantity and quality of ore being well maintained. About this time the Victorian gold rush started which quickly reduced the employed men and boys, in 30th September, 1853 to 167 all told, and water was allowed to rise, flooding the lower levels.
18th April, 1854 — Men were re turning and the numbers increased steadily to 191 and upwards to 688 on April of 1855, and in March, 1856 to 773.

I very much doubt there would be individual records of miners from that period.

The Advertiser 26 Sep 1946

……….She was the daughter of Clement Bralla, who came to South Australia from Spain with the first lot of mules for the Burra copper mines. He subsequently worked for Mr. C. J. Ware, a sheep farmer at World's End, and was a great horseman, was never known to be thrown. A couple of years after the Blinman mine was opened, Mr. and Mrs. Bralla trekked up there from the Burra with their four children in a hooded waggon.

This is a fascinating piece of SA history. Born and bred in SA, I had no idea that Chileans and their mule teams were brought over here to the copper mines. Some of my own ancestors lived and worked in the Copper Triangle.
Bill, did all of the Chileans settle here in SA, or end up going back to Chile?

Thankyou cando and pinefamily for the additional links/info etc; it all makes quite fascinating reading.  I have lived in SA all my life (67yrs) and I too had virtually no knowledge of who were working in the early mines until I started taking an interest in my wife's family tree.  pinefamily, I'm not sure how many of the chilean muleteers stayed in Australia; not sure that the authorities knew either!  Burra is only 2-3 hours north of Adelaide so we will make a visit shortly - they have quite a good self tour of the old mines which I took many years ago, prior to having any knowledge of the relevance to my wife's family.   Thank you once again.

There are many Pizaros in SA still and in VIC. All wanting more info...

The Malacca left Valparaiso, Chile on 8/1/1855 and arrived Port Adelaide 26/2/1855. There were 14 Chilian natives (muleteers), their wives and families on board. The Malacca then sailed from Pt Adelaide arriving at Port Wakefield 3/3/1855. The Chilians and the cargo of mules then travelled to the copper mines at Burra.
I have been unsuccessful in locating a passenger list and wonder if anyone can assist please.

As was mentioned previously I doubt there was ever a passenger list.  Read all the previous posts on the thread please.

I found a newspaper report was a little different to that quoted by the OP.

On his death certificate how many years in Australia and in each State?

He was in SA 3 yrs and 54 yrs in Vic.
