William Dixon of Faugh Cumberland and other locations
« on: Friday 20 June 14 12:44 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am more than a little confused by the birth place of William Dixon born about 1857/8
I first find him on the 1881 census as a Chimney Sweep in the parish of Caldewgate Carlisle and place of birth given as Faugh which I understand was a village near Wetheral, Carlisle. He is married to a Sarah from Hensingham.( His brother john is lower down on the same census return and was the subject of earlier posts )
In 1901 Williams place of birth is given as Brampton and in 1911 as Crogling .Living at Rigg Street Carlisle. Still a Chimney sweep.
So really not sure where he was born or were the birth would be registered.
There is a birth  in 1857 at Brampton and a  Baptism at Hayton by Brampton 13 Dec 1857 which could be him--but its a popular name so who knows.( his father was also William and a chimney Sweep)
So far have been Unable to locate William b 1857 prior to 1881 or on a 1891 census and any help would be appreciated.
One possible thought is  the 1861 census for Hayton Cumberland ---which I assume is Hayton by Brampton . Here we have a John Dixon and Hannah Grandparents to a William and John age 3 together with the boys father William Dixon 28--a widower . Is it linked ????---or am I miles a way.
Unfortunately William and Sarah according to latter census had no children that I can work with. A Foster son Alfred Purdam born Carlisle  age 16 is shown.
Would like to try and trace his birth and parents but the lay of the land in Cumbria is confusing me.

Yes, that looks good - both boys (John and William)  christened 13 Dec 1857 Hayton By Brampton.

Agree RG 9 Piece 3902 Folio 25 Page 10 in 1861 showing the widowed father William with them and his parents.

Think this is a possibility for William with his parents and siblings in 1841 - HO107 Piece 172 Book 6 - Civil Parish Croglin. Sub Reg District Kirkoswald.

John Dixon  40  Hannah Dixon  40
Thomas Dixon  11 William Dixon  9
Joshua Dixon  6 Sarah Dixon  4  Jane Dixon  1

Just a thought. I wonder What happened to  Williams father after 1861.
He was born 1833 Kirkoswald and thanks to your information we know he was Christened 11 March 1837 Croglin.  Around 1885/5 he married a Jane Unknown-- who we know has died by the 1861 census as William senior is living with his parents and his children and listed as a Widow.
I know he was a  Sweep---information from Son Johns Marriage cert . But unable to find William Senior on any returns. He may have remarried . We are missing the 1871 census for both him and his sons. Picking the boys William and John up on the 1881 census. Another mystery.
