Is or was there a place named Desea?
« on: Friday 20 June 14 13:53 BST (UK) »
Hi all rootschatters :o.

Researching my Surman family .I have his daughter down on 1911 census in London under her married name of Mortimer as follows:
Edward Mortimer aged 32 Farrier.
Mary Mortimer aged 32 born Desea India
along with their children.

Can anyone tell me if there was a district or place in India named DESEA or could it have been put down wrong on census..
previous census just show Mary as being born in India. All her siblings born Jersey channel Isles or England.

1901 she is married to Edward residing in St Helier
1891 she is living with her
Grandmother Ellen Donaghue again in St Helier and is aged 12 she is shown as born East Indies
Her father was Josiah Surman mother Margaret Donaghue.
Cannot find family in 1881 so presume they were out in India at that time.
They were back by 1885 when her younger sister Ellen Sophia Surman born in Woolwich 1885
In 1891 rest of the family are residing in Plumstead so looks like Josiahs time in India was only somewhere between
1874 ( he had a daughter born in Jersey Helena josephine surman in c1875) and 1885.
If anyone has any advice on how to go about tracing the familys time in India I would be grateful.
Josiah married Margaret Donaghue 1871 Farnham Surrey.
He was born 1838 Wokingham..
In 1911 he is shown as aged 73 living in New Romney Kent .His first wife has died ( he remarried 1893 to Charlotte Gerard. In this census he is shown as an army pensioner.
Any help re Desea or how to trace his time in India appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this
Trixi

Yes Maureen youre right! Everything fits as josiahs father in law was also out in India and was Irish. James Donaghoe.I see that the area is well known for its potatoes.Ironic as James joined up and moved to the Channel isles to escape the potato famine. States most of the army there from Ireland. Thanks rosie now I can go forward .

This post is so interesting as I too am searching for details on the surman side of my family and have been trying to trace information on Helena Surman daughter of Josiah. She is my great grandmother and I’m struggling to find some missing information. If anyone has any family connections on the Surman family I would love to know. We were told that Helena had an illegitimate child When she was 16. There are no hospital records of this in Jersey but I’m wondering now if she was in India at the time?
