What happened to the Fowler sisters?
« on: Friday 20 June 14 17:04 BST (UK) »
John Fowler and his wife Joanna had three daughters who survived to be listed on the 1841 census for Launceston, Cornwall.
Mary Ann Wills Fowler bapt 4 July 1824 Launceston
Jane Fowler b abt 1829 Dunleer, Ireland
Harriet Fowler b abt 1831 Finglass Dublin

(John was in Royal Sappers and Miners as a surveyor and according to Army record worked on the Irish survey).
In 1851, Mary Ann and Harriet are in London, Mary Ann is in partnership with Miriam Vosper / Vesper (also born Launceston) as a dressmaker. Harriet is a servant out of place.
Jane is in Plymouth training to be a servant.

Harriet marries William Edgecumbe in Pancras dist later in 1851 and I have tracked their family, but I cannot find what happened to Jane or Mary Ann.

Their mother (Joanna) died in 1841 and by 1851 John had remarried and started a second family in Launceston. I have traced the wife and all her children to Canada (1861 Canada census). Jane and Mary Ann's two younger (full) brothers emigrated to USA. But no sign of the two girls with either groups.

Freebmd.org.uk has a Mary Ann Fowler who died in St. Columb in Cornwall in 1857. Could she be yours?

It's a possibility, although I thought she would be unlikely to go back to Cornwall after living in London in 1851. Especially as the rest of her family had left there sometime between 1855 and 1861.

Have just checked 1851 and 61 censuses for Mary Ann Fowler in St Columb and there is one born 1806 who appears on 1851 and not on 1861, so I think it may be her death.

Just looked again at my notes for the missing Jane Fowler and I can't see why I have her place of birth as Dunleer in Ireland. The only definite I have for her is from the 1841 census which gives her age as 12 and "I" for Ireland in the where born column. Her sister was born in Finglass according to 1851 census. Their father's service record isn't detailed enough to give wife and children, but it does confirm he was in Ireland.
The Jane that I found in Plymouth (born Dublin and training to be  a servant in 1851 seems to be in a penitentiary, so I would expect there to be some records of what crime she committed. Would anyone know if those records were available on line?

Just come back to the mising Fowler girls after finding the two boys John and Charles on 1860 US census. They are in the household of William Smith and wife MA (later census confirms Mary Ann). They are both born England. They have two daughters Harriet and Ruth born England 1854 and 1856 approx and two daughters born in US.

Could Mary Ann Smith be  Mary Ann Fowler? Have found two possible births in London mmn Fowler, but as Smith is so common it could just be a coincidence. Also can't find a William Smith to a Mary Ann xx marriage which would fit.
Any ideas anyone?
