Cousin match
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 08:19 BST (UK) »
I have done a Y37 test with FTDNA also a Familyfinder test.

A 2nd cousin once removed (not on my male line) has taken the Y37 test only.

He has matched with quite a number of people bearing his surname and I have none sharing my name. Tough luck I guess but not the point of my question here.

The question is should I get him as a match on my familyfinder results or will he need to do a familyfinder test for that to happen.

Thanks

Hi creaney,

As I understand it the Y tests, test only the Y-chromosome, while the Family Finder tests all the matched pairs plus (recently added) the X-chromosome.

Only people who have done the Family Finder test or who have uploaded autosomal data from elsewhere, will appear in you Family Finder matches
McDonough, Oliver, McLoughlin, O'Brien, Cuthbert, Keegan, Quirk(e), O'Malley, McGuirk (Ireland)
Dudley, Winchurch, Wolverson, Brookes (Black Country)

Suggest you try to persuade your cousin to take the Family Finder test. Looking at matches you have in common will be a help to you both in your research. You may also find that your cousin has matches that are a result of common ancestors, but where you have not inherited the same segments so they are not on your match list. Can be very useful. By testing my aunt I have found some interesting matches for her that are my relatives but do not appear on my own match list.

Thanks for your replies, I understand now.

The cousin has only just had his first results but hopefully after he has got his read round that he will be upgrading at which time I will be persuading him to join me on the familyfinder route.
