Where is/was Dafarn Newydd, Llanbadrig
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 19:05 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone with local knowledge? I'm trying to find Dafarn Newydd Llanbadrig - the home of William Lewis and his family in the censuses of 1841 to 1891. Home to his daughter Ann Evans in 1901 and granddaughter Catherine Williams in 1911.
The house is referred to as Dafarn Newydd, Carreglefn and Dafarn Newydd, Rhosgoch, Rhos y Bol in other records.

Looking at properties close to "Dafarn Newydd" in various censuses, the property currently known as Dafarn Hwyaid, postcode LL66 0AA,looks a possible candidate to me.This is not based on any local knowledge.

Many thanks for the suggestion Roger, it does seem to be a possibility. But I can find separate census records in 1881 and 1901 for both properties - Dafarn Newydd and Dafarn Hwyaid.

For example: Dafarn Hwyiaid 1881 - RG11, piece 5589, folio 91, page 6 family Griffith.
                    Dafarn Newydd 1881 - RG11, piece 5589, folio 80, page 2 family Lewis

I wonder whether it is possible to locate Dafarn Newydd precisely from the folio number and page number?

Looking at the 1881 census for Dafarn Newydd, the first thing that strikes me is that the farmer (Lewis) was only farming 4 acres - so not a large place?

Secondly, page 1 of the folio says:

Llanbadrig Parish
Part of the parish of Llanbadrig comprising all the houses in that part of the parish south of road leading from Fodil-y-Legu>??> to Rhos y file and Garrag hefn Hamlet.

Does that make sense to you? ;D

Hi dragonT,

The property Dafarn Newydd still exists but under a different name. The cottage is now called Berwyn and is located on the Llanfechell to Rhosgoch road. The property is about 3 miles south east of Llanfechell near the village of Carreglefn. The property (a white cottage) is easily seen on the corner of a t-junction across the road from a farm called Crow.

According to the OS map for 1963 it was still called Dafarn Newydd but by the time of the 1974 OS map its name had changed to Berwyn.

Hope this helps? :)

In other records William Lewis is described as a stonemason and an agricultural labourer so farmer seems a bit of an exaggeration! I'm familiar with some of the local place names and think the description from 1881 reads 'Part of.... leading from Fodol y Llyn to Rhos y pile(?) and Garreglefn Hamlet'.

Thank you 100%Gog, that is a great help. I'm visiting Anglesey in July and I feel sure I'll find it from your directions.

Following "100% Gog"'s excellent description,I found it easiest to locate on www.old-maps.co.uk.Use the postcode LL68 0NT as the search term, then select "Berwyn".When the map loads,go to the 1924 1:2500 historical equivalent and use Windows Zoom up to 400% to magnify.
