1891 and 1901 Census Lookup
« on: Friday 27 June 14 05:47 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could SKS  do a lookup on the  1891 & 1901 Census for a George Wilson Ritchie born about 1877 Northumberland....I think it could have been Newcastle Upon Tyne.   His parents were Joseph Ritchie b. about 1852....Elizabeth nee Wilson b. about 1855.

I think I found him in 1911 Census   aged 32  living with his wife Margate or  Margaret  at his brother in laws place at 304 Sheilds Rd  Newcastle upon Tyne.

Appreciate any help,  thanking you in advance.

Kind Regards

Ancestry have him in Westgate Newcastle in 1891 aged 13 with his family-Joseph was a fireman, mother Elizabeth(transcribed Eliza but on the original you can see it's shortened -Elizbth)
The name is mistranscribed Kilcher-already amended by someone and it's certainly easy to see how that mistake was made- here they all are:
Joseph Kilcher   38
Eliza Kilcher   37
Thomas Kilcher   15
George W Kilcher   13
Anna J Kilcher   10
Dorothy Kilcher   7
Elizabeth Kilcher   5
Christena Kilcher   3
James W Kilcher   1
Alexander A Kilcher   1

I can't find him in 1901 but I agree it's him in 1911 living with his younger sister Elizabeth, her husband William Patterson, their children and George's wife- definitely spelled Margate. Both men are brickworks labourers.

Harvey- Essex

I can't find Joseph or Elizabeth in 1901 either, though there is a death of a Joseph Ritchie aged 40 Sept 1893 in Newcastle which could well be George's father.
I have found a marriage between George W Ritchie and Margaret (Not Margate!)  Maconochie Newcastle On Tyne December 1910. The record is on FreeBMD
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
The couple had two children-Margaret -June 1914 and Georgina W- Dec 1916
George Wilson Ritchie's birth was registered Sept 1877.
The nearest birth I've found for Margaret is Margaret McKenzie Dec 1880 Newcastle  :-\

He could have been in South Africa for the Boer War. The Second Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902. The British Army started off with 12,546 men in South Africa when the war began, but the number of officers and men actually employed from first to last, during the war, was officially given as 448,435.

Trish's suggestion for what became of Elizabeth and her children seems likely. The youngest two must have been twins- James Wallace and Alexander Alcock were both baptised in Elswick 5th March 1890. James died April 1891. I'm not sure what became of Alexander but it's strange that he wasn't still with his mother in 1901-assuming he survived until then.

Many thanks janfurness, sgs28, trish1120, stan,

Good leads for me to follow up on. I did have Joseph Ritchie aged 40 Sept 1893 death as on his daughter Dorothy (Dora) Ritchie's marriage certificate he was deceased.

Stan....I did think George Wilson Ritchie could have been serving in the services,  now to go and search.

janfurness,  I think below is the family I have been looking for,  thank you so much.
