Bath, Somerset - WHEELER 1901 and 1912 Addresses
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 04:50 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Edwin Wheeler (bd1886) and sister Lilian Maud (bd1888) were orphaned in 1892. They may have been placed in the workhouse. 1901 Census has Edwin living at Highbury House, Bath, St Saviour's parish, Walcot, with several other boys. Would this be one of Bath's Scattered Homes?

Also, in 1912, Edwin gave the address 2 Malcombe Rd, Durley Park, Bath as his last residence. Then he died. I am hoping this was his sister Lily's address.
Is Melcombe Rd, Durley Park, Bath still standing and how would I find who lived there in 1912?

Thanks for any help,

No that place isn't one of the scattered home, by the time he was orphaned he may well have been expected to fend for his self. I have looked at my notes about boarded out children and his name doesnt come up. Just for interest the scattered home names were by the start of the 20th C:

Five Ways House at Batheaston
Larkhall Place
15 Lambridge Place
Thomas Street (this may have been changed for another house by the end of 19C)
Butty Piece Cottage
1&2 Bridge Street
14 Caroline Buildings

Sorry I can't help anymore

Thanks for the info Anne,
Edwin, the oldest sibling, was 6 when parents died in 1892 and I think the 3 young children went into Odd Down Union House. Sister Elsie died in 1895 and the informant was Mr Eddols, Master of the workhouse.
I've not yet found the records of the Union House to see the circumstances of their admittance and discharge.

Quick look at Bath Post Office Directory.
There does not appear to be any street of that name, Melcombe Road, in 1912 and no E Wheeler at any address which looks like like Melcombe Road.
There are now some flats in Melcombe Road but they were not built until the mid 1970s. The houses in Melcombe Road were probably 1920s.

Hello & a warm welcome to Rootschat bjmacwill  :)

Take a look at the link below regarding workhouses Bath, Somerset
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Bath/
There’s  wide variety of records including: Guardians' minute books (1836-1930) available at Bath & North East Somerset Record Office
(if you click on that name it takes you to another page and there’s an email address – perhaps they may be able to help)

Were their parents
William Frederick Wheeler & Emma nee Ro(w)lands living Peter Street, Bath, Somerset, England in 1891,
Fredk Wheeler 32 occ Tailor, Emma 38, EDWIN 5 & Elsie 2 Weeks, all born Bath

Bath BMD has Edwin & Lilian birth entries as

1886 Edwin Charles mmn Rolands
1888 Maud Lilian mmn Rowlands
1891 Elsie mmn Roland

marriage
1879 Bath Register Office
WHEELER   William Frederick
ROWLANDS Emma

Did Edwin have siblings that died?

Frederica b/d1881, Ida Egeria Winifred b1882d1883
(both have mmn Rowland)

I don’t know if there’s a connection may just be a coincidence there’s a
Fredk Wm Wheeler age 7 born c1884 Bath with his grandparents and their surname is ROWLANDS they are living Oldfield Park Terrace, Sydenham Road, Bath, Somerset in 1891

I'm not seeing a FWW mmn Rowlands  on Bath BMD although there is one for a
Frederick William Wheeler in 1883 BUT his mother's maiden name is BAILEY  :-\
there's this marriage in 1881 Bath Register Office WHEELER Charles / BAILEY Emily

I forgot to check Bath BMD for the 1872 marriage ::)

It looks as if Ellen Wighton was previously married indicated by the two surnames

Bath Register Office
GOLLEDGE   Henry   ROWLAND Ellen
GOLLEDGE   Henry   WIGHTON   Ellen

There’s a death of a
James WIGHTON age 38 in Bath Jun qtr 1871

1871c Bath
James age 37 & Ellen WIGHTON age 28
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VFJ1-F7F

this is the only marriage I could find
Dec 1867 Cardiff
James WIGHTON name on same page Ellen RAWLINGS

Oh my gosh! Thank you everyone. I’ve been trying to track down my putative grandfather for years and suddenly getting several clues.

My father was a Home Child sent to Canada in 1924. Documents from the Foundling Hosp say that, in early 1910, his father, Edwin Wheeler, disappeared when told of the pregnancy. Edwin was working as a footman/valet in Park Lane, West London.

In 1911, this Bath Edwin Wheeler was living in Kensington, 42 Bramber Rd, and hired as footman by George Vanderbilt and died in 1912 on the Titanic. No other Edwin Wheeler fits the bill as far as age, occupation or marital status in 1911, so I hope to find a living relative who will either share DNA or know where Edwin worked in London.

Here’s the family I’m seeking (I’m awaiting BMD from the GRO to tie things together)
1879 Frederick William Wheeler  marries Emma Rowlands in Bath
1881- 1881 Frederica
1882 – 1883  Ida
1886 – 1912 Edwin Charles
1888 – Maude Lilian – 1901 Census in Hosp and 1911 as niece
1891 – 1895 Elsie (awaiting DC to see if she died in Odd Down Union House)

Perhaps there was a Frederick William born before  Edwin and living with grandparents. I see Bathforum school records with Mrs Rowlands as guardian. (Bath Record Office site) I’ll pursue that angle. There is no record of Emma after 1891. Dead, disappeared, hospital?

Thank you for the connection of  Ellen Golledge to Ellen Rowlands. Now to see if Maud Lilian married Mitchell or Eades abt 1908. And if they lived in Durley Park in 1911/12. And if she had any children.

Thanks again,
