Allan family
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 09:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on my grandad john allans side of the family. We know he lived at greenhow farm near dufton Appleby in Cumbria and we think it was greystoke prior to this. He was born in 1912 and died 1984, but we know nothing of his family, can anyone help? Many thanks Rebecca

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
If anyone in your family has his marriage certificate and birth certificate then these should give you a good starting point to work backwards with information about his parents. If you do not have them then you can search for the relevant entries on freebmd.org.uk where you can find the registration district, quarter, volume and page of the registration. You can then go to www.gro.gov.uk and order a copy of the certificates.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

His death in 1984 suggests a birth date of 29th May 1912,making this one look the right one.

Births Jun 1912

Allan    John    mmn Richardson   in E.Ward    10b   1431

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/districts.pl?r=127304177&d=bmd_1399917892

If you have any of the certs, birth or marriage, you may be able to confirm this?
Perhaps you know of some aunts and uncles names?

Possible parents marriage, which should mean you may be able to find them on the 1911 census.

Marriages Sep 1906

ALLAN    Christopher        E. Ward    10b   1253
Richardson    Edna         E. Ward    10b   1253

Christopher should be married to Edna by 1911 so the Great Musgrave Christopher can't be the right one.

I have found him and Edna but Rootschat rules don't allow posting of 1911 and at the moment I can't find him born Soulby c1884 in 1901. Edna Richardson 17 Apprentice milliner and Dressmaker born Dufton  is staying with her cousin Mary Dargue a Draper Milliner and Dressmaker in Carlisle in 1901 RG13/4864/55 pg24

There are quite a few Allan/Richardson marriages, but I went for the 1906 one as it was in the same area as grandad John was born in 6 years later.

Perhaps the OP has some more info for us to rule Christopher and Edna in or out!

They do look very hopeful from 1911, but of course certificates are needed to confirm.
