findmypast: public trees
« on: Monday 30 June 14 02:42 BST (UK) »
Just took advantage of the $1/month offer at findmypast

I can see how to search on 'all records' or BMD, Census, Church etc... but  I cant see how to search on any public trees that may have shared ancestors..
I'm very familiar with ancestry.co.uk.. and it shows be hits from other trees

So how do i do this at FindMyPast ??

Hi

I don't think you can at the moment but they promise that the facility 'is coming soon'

But they do give you the option to make your own tree public..
So if you cannot search anybody elses public tree, then why do they give me the option to make my own public ?

Doesnt really make sense to me  ???

Before they can implement viewing of public trees they would have to have members with public trees. From reading Gadget's link it looks like the trees will conceal living people but allow other members to view dead people on your tree upon request, unless the tree is fully public?

I suppose if no one makes their tree fully public then you will not be able to view any trees,

Is'nt that what happens with GR ?

You can search an Index to see if anyone has a possible match but have to contact the tree owner to "open" the tree to view it (for which you need to subscribe)

As FindMyPast and GR are owned by the same company it seems likely they will adopt the same principle !

I do wonder just how many trees there are on FindMyPast.

As it is a 'sister' site to Genes Reunited, I would think that most would have their trees on their.  Or even on Ancestry.

I know when I did have FindMyPast membership, I did not bother with putting my tree on there.  I only wanted access to certain records.
