Paley Ireland or England???
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 05:49 BST (UK) »
HI,
I am looking for any information on my gggrandfather John Paley. I believe he was born in 1831 in  Ireland but I can't find any information to prove that. His obituary and death certificate have little to no information. He died August 7, 1890 in  Albany, NY USA. He was married to Jane Carlisle, who was the daughter of James Carlisle and Phoebe Norwood of Belfast.

I would love to find out where he was born and his parents names. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

HI Trish,
Thanks so much for the reply. Everything I've come across for him says Ireland, but I can't find anything specific--especially in Ireland. I've hit such a roadblock with him. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

Where did they marry?
I can't see them in Ireland.
Paley isn't a common name & they all seem to be south of the border.

HI Jim,
Thanks so much for your reply. I haven't been able to find anything pertaining to where they got married. I think possibly NY, but not sure at all. They lived in Albany, NY and NYC at different times possibly even CT. I wonder if John could be his middle name??? The paley surname is seen in Giggleswick and Yorkshire, but I can't find him there either. It has been a huge roadblock and mystery to me for years.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Irish records are notoriously difficult to search.
Only the 1901 & 1911 census survives so you have to rely on Parish records.
Without knowing which Parish to look in it's almost impossible.
The Paley name seems to be mainly from around Dublin.
As the first 2 children were born in CT maybe that's the place to search for a marriage.

Hi,
I am assuming that they were married shortly before 1853 when their first child was born. I thought that piece of info would help, but to no avail. I have looked in Albany, NYC, and CT, but always come up with nothing. It's so strange and frustrating. I was in contact with someone in Ireland who is a paley, but she couldn't find any John there. She said that most of the paley's there were from Armargh???  I have very little info that would give me something to go on. His death certificate just says Ireland. His obit just says his name and date. Cemetery record just says Ireland. It's so weird. There has to be something out there that will lead me in the right direction. lol. Thanks again so much,
Jennifer

Are there any other Paleys from Ireland living near them in the census?  Maybe there's a sibling or other relative around.
