William Allen Knight birth Hockley
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 17:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to research my maternal great grandfather, William Allen Knight.  On his marriage certificate it states that he was born in Hockley Essex in 1874.  Hockley is also given as his birthplace on the 1901 census.  However, he does not appear in the BMD records on Ancestry and so I spent one day researching the Essex record office on line.   This is very good value at £5 for a day's access, but I was unable to find anyone who matched.  I will try again but I just wondered if anyone had an idea of where to go from here.   William was a labourer at Battersea gas works in 1901 and died aged 29 in 1902 / 1903.  He is buried at Battersea new cemetery (burial January 1903). I was told that some scaffolding gave way but I don't know if this accident was at the gas works.  His father was also William Allen Knight (also a labourer) and he was alive in 1894 as he is mentioned on his son's wedding certificate.   Any help gratefully received!

There are a couple of William Knights on www.freebmd.org.uk with births registered in Essex in 1874. Have you ruled them out?

Could also be worth just looking for him as William Allen. I spent 3 years trying to track down a great grandfather who had 3 names and finally found him using just the first two. The third was added a few years later when his mother married :)

I wonder if the 1901 census birthplace of Hockley is a mistake. There is this birth -

Births Dec qtr 1875 - William Allen T. KNIGHT, Horsham, 2b/288.

He is living with his parents in Battersea in 1891, and his father was William A. KNIGHT.

Thank you everyone for the replies.  I have put his three names in because they are on the wedding certificate but I have looked at the other William Knights (just two names) I found in Essex and nothing seems to fit - yet.  The Horsham one is very interesting, although the 1901 census showing William, his wife Florence and two children Florence and George is definitely correct as I knew the address from my grandmother.  There it does say Hockley Essex but I suppose it could be a transcription error, so I will check the Horsham link out, especially as the names are exact.  Thank you again.

I have checked out the Horsham W A Knight but the age would be out by two years according to the marriage record and the burial record.  However it has taught me to be aware of possible transcription errors.  Thank you

Could still be him with a couple of years difference on the date. I have a great grandfather who got younger each time he married to adjust to nearer the age of his new bride :)

If this is him in 1881 his birthplace is recorded as Islington

Mary Knight   34
Alfred Knight   14
John Knight   12
Fredk. Knight   10
William Knight   7   born islington
Polly Knight   3
Florence Knight   1

Registration district:   Wandsworth
Civil Parish:   Battersea
County/Island:   London

This Williams age fits with the death and the father is also a Labourer in Battersea which would fit the marriage certificate details
