Anomolies on Marriage Certificates
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 17:45 BST (UK) »
Am researching a friend's family for her.  A marriage certificate appears to have the incorrect name for the bride:  Rachel Pain, father Abel Pain.  Her maiden name however on children's birth cert is given as Homer.  I have done extensive searches but   can find no Rachel Pain in the area, nor an Abel Pain, but have found an Abel Homer with a daughter Rachel.  There was a Rachel Homer married later on in the same year (1877) but she married a different person altogether and have traced her to her father who was not Abel. Has anyone any idea how this might have come about?  Were marriage certs filled in at the time of the marriage, in church, as they are now?  This is a complete mystery.  Neither of the witnesses are called Pain so it was not confused there.  Grateful for any ideas.

Welcome to Rootschat.

How do you know that the Rachel nee Homer on the birth certificates is the same Rachel (Pain) as on the marriage certificate?

Mistakes did happen.

Did Rachel sign the marriage register?

Can you tell us a bit more about your Rachel after marriage?   eg name of husband and children, any census records?   Maybe you have just found the wrong marriage?

Perhaps a transcription error?  Have you got the original marriage cert or any of the the bc's for the children?

Was Rachel married before?

Could the husband have had two wives both Rachel? Might help to have his name and the dates the children came along.

Hi Rosie 99, yes that is the entry.  However can find no Rachel nor Abel Pain, and my friend refuses to believe that this is not the correct marriage.  Am going to see if Joseph married twice.  Thanks.
