William Barden
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 19:17 BST (UK) »
I am looking for William Barden, born about 1806-1815 in East Sussex, probably in or close to Westfield.  This William Barden is not the one born in Icklesham that married Mary.  This one married Elizabeth Tanton just over the border in Appledore, Kent in 1836.  He appears in the 1841 Census aged '25' as an Ag. Lab.and in the 1851 Census aged 40 as an Ag. Lab./Pauper.  I do not yet have a definite death record for him.  He had several children, including Harriet, who was my great-grandmother.  In the 1851 Census, his place of birth seems to have been transposed incorrectly with that of his wife, Elizabeth.  She is down as being born in Westfield, Kent (this is wrong too!) and he as born in Lydd, Kent (which is where she was born).
Any help gratefully received.
Joe Perry
PS Are there searchable CDs of Parish Registers of East Sussex for sale anywhere?

1841 census states he was born in Kent, 1851 Lydd, Kent and she Westfield, Kent (as you state) - however, I believe that Westfield should in fact be Whitfield.

In 1861 and 1871 widowed Elizabeth states she was born Whitfield, Kent (nr. Dover) a fair old distance from Lydd where you say she was born.

The baptism of an Elizabeth Tanton in Lydd 1812 is dau. of a George and Elizabeth.

However, in 1861, when widowed, Elizabeth has her mother living with her and she's named Susannah not Elizabeth - it doesn't sound like the baptism at Lydd is your Elizabeth Tanton.

Familysearch shows:

Elizabeth Tanton bp.29/3/1816 Whitfield, Kent, dau. of George and Susan.

This confirms her birthplace as Whitfield (not Lydd), as given on 1861/1871 census.

Dear Annette
Thanks - I am sure you are right.  I should have checked the censuses before raising this issue.
Elizabeth must have been born in Whitfield.  I still have a problem with William, since I know he was not born in Lydd because I have the Kent Family History Society CD with parish records for Lydd and he is not listed.
But that is another story.  Perhaps he said was born in Lydden and the transcriber of the census mistook it for Lydd.  Lydden is only three miles from Whitfield so that might explain how they met.
I have ordered the parish records for Lydden from Parish Chest so I might find out fairly soon.
Your help has been invaluable - Thanks again!
Thanks and best wishes
Joe

As a brief follow-up question, I have seen that in 1813 a William Barton was baptised in Whitfield, St Peter (same church as William Barden's future wife).  Perhaps neither William nor Elizabeth were literate, each signing their marriage certificate with an 'X' (his/her mark).
My question is: how likely is it that the name Barton was changed to Barden, or that the vicar misheard the name and transcribed it wrongly?  In the medium term I can look at the parish records for Whitfield and trace the Barton/Barden line back to see whether there are any clues.  Any other suggestions?
