Introducing myself
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 05:08 BST (UK) »
Hello!
I'm fascinated by this web site. 3 years ago, I learned no one had done a genealogical history of my family. I thought "someone needs to do this" so I appointed myself to be the family historian. Three years and countless hours of research later, I have documented 500+ people in my family tree and this number continues to grow. Along the way, I have met a number of relatives I never knew I had.
Its been a fascinating journey. When ultimately completed, my plan is to compile the stories of my ancestors into a book called "Legacy: The Stories of the Johnson/Stokes Families"

I am currently working with 5 primary family lines: Stokes, Johnson, Penton, Cullen, and Mandel. There are multiple other family lines that connect with these 5 which makes the tree a bit confusing sometimes.

Any tips or hints on doing research is welcome
Thank you :)

Welcome to rootschat drummerswife. With 500 people in your family tree it doesn't seem as though you are in need of any help with your research.  :)

If you have come to a halt with any of your lines, you can ask for help on the appropriate board. Is there anything specific you need help with?

If you have not already done so, You can add your surnames to the Surname Interests which you can find at the bottom of the page below 'Your Tools'. It might be useful to know whereabouts each of your 5 main surnames originate (country/county).

A couple of things to remember - on rootschat we are not allowed to mention the names of anyone still living, and if you post threads related to the same topic or same family, it is appreciated if you post links to similar threads to avoid duplication.

And though not obligatory for you to add location to your profile, it is useful to know whereabouts in the world you are as advice can then take your location into consideration.

I'm sure you will enjoy rootschat.  ;D

Hallo drummerswife,

A couple of additonal suggestions to get you going with using Rootschat:

- Pick one of the brick walls you have been banging your head against and post a topic. You will no doubt be amazed at the new leads that come up when fresh eyes take a look at it.

- Since you are already a competent researcher take a look at some of the questions posted by beginners and offer them some tips to get them on the right track. You will also develop your own knowledge of potential sources by reading other responses to threads where you have made contributions.
Crackett, Cracket, Webb, Turner, Henderson, Murray, Carr, Stavers, Thornton, Oliver, Davis, Hall, Anderson, Atknin, Austin, Bainbridge, Beach, Bullman, Charlton, Chator, Corbett, Corsall, Coxon, Davis, Dinnin, Dow, Farside, Fitton, Garden, Geddes, Gowans, Harmsworth, Hedderweek, Heron, Hedley, Hunter, Ironside, Jameson, Johnson, Laidler, Leck, Mason, Miller, Milne, Nesbitt, Newton, Parkinson, Piery, Prudow, Reay, Reed, Read, Reid, Robinson, Ruddiman, Smith, Tait, Thompson, Watson, Wilson, Youn

Welcome to Rootschat!

As well as the great suggestions from Ruskie and Craclyn I have one other suggestion:

Spend a bit of time browsing around the various message boards - and don't forget to check out "the lighter side" and "totally off topic" - you will soon find that rootschatters are not only full of knowledge and willingness to help, but also know how to have fun!    ;D

All the best  :)
Philip

A Big THANK YOU :) for the welcome and the tips. I really appreciate that. I smile at the suggestion of picking a brick wall and post a topic. It is one of these brick walls that was really my motivation to seek out a place like this. I will be posting a topic on this.
Thank you for your comments on my research abilities. Truthfully, when I started this project 3 years ago, I had never done anything like this before so I'm really just figuring it out as I go along.  :)

That is very true!  :)

drummerswife, let us know when you have started a new thread and we will have a look, try to help, or see if others are able to help you. Remember to tell us (in reasonable detail) what you already know about the family so nobody goes over old ground and searches for things you already have. Looking forward to trying to break down your brick wall/s.  :)
