Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Hi

My father George Edward Butler was in the above regiment from 1924 to 1945 his army number was 5102245 he had an army pension on discharge but I know little about his service , can anyone point me in the right direction to find out about his movement with the army.

For prople still serving after 1920, the records are still with the MOD!

Normal cost is £30, but next-of-kin can get records free.

Thank you for the link will get onto it straight away, in the meantime is it possible to find out the movement of the regiment generally during these years.

They had two battalions during the 1920s and 1930s. You need to know where he was in one year at least in order to discover whether he was 1st or 2nd Battalion. Both served in India. One mainly in the 1920s, the other mainly in the 1930s.

Next of Kin have to pay £30. Only his spouse get it for free. You need a death certificate as well.

The Royal Warwickshire Regiment was eventually merged into the Fusiliers Brigade.  The depot at Budbrooke near Leamington Spa closed around 1960.  The museum in Warwick has a large section devoted to the regiment, they may be able to help.  As far as I am aware there are at least 2 books which cover the the regiment's history from 1900 onwards until it ceased to exist.

Thank you for the reply I will pop to Library and see if I can get the books,

Regarding the Battalion I have his permanent pass dated January 1930 which states 1st Battalion but I have some memories of him telling me about the 2nd so would it be possible that he could have served in both.

If I order the papers from Mod what information would they contain , just wondering what I would get for my£30.

My Grandfather was Leslie Walter Cox of the 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment 5102250. Served 1931 - 1949 captured 28th May 1940 at Dunkirk. This may give you some idea what Battalion George Edward Butler was in as their service numbers are very close. Good luck with your research. Andy
