Old Gildersome manuscript
« on: Monday 07 July 14 06:06 BST (UK) »
I have an original document (on vellum) from 1583 (during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1) regarding the transfer of two meadows (meddos) in Gildersome, between Robert Popeley and Robert & George Appleyerde. The land is near Robert Strynger's land. The spelling is in the old style (England is Ynglande, etc), so I assume that Appleyerde is now Appleyard. I am wondering if there are any descendents of these people still living in the area. Or if anyone can tell me anything about them and could possibly know how this document ended up in my secondhand bookshop in Australia, thanks heaps, Lorraine

Hi.  I just came across your post.  My husband's family are Appleyards from West Yorkshire (Gildersome is in West Yorkshire.) I have only got as far back as the early 1700s so far, so I don't know if they are related to the Appleyards in your document or not.  Sounds intriguing though!
Have you managed to find out anything else about the document or the people in it?
Best wishes,
Jo

Hi Jo, thanks heaps for contacting me. I have since found out how the manuscript came to Australia and how it ended up in my bookshop. I am now trying to find a link between the family who had it for the last 100 years (Reuben Brown of Morley, whose two daughters brought it over here in 1923) and the Popeleys or Appleyards (who were named on the deed). Have you, by any chance, come across one of your Appleyards marrying a Brown? Or a Naylor (Reuben's wife was Ruth Naylor). Going back further, Reuben's parents were David Brown and Hannah Wade. David Brown's parents were Stephen Brown and Mary Garnett (daughter of James Garnett). Ruth's parents were Joseph Naylor and Ann Gaunt. They all lived in Morley or not far away. That's as far as I've gone back, looking for a connection to see if the deed was handed down in the family. Looking forward to hearing back from you, cheers, Lorraine
