Oh gosh, what a find, I hope a relative  in Canada can take ownership of this lovely photograph, is it worth also putting it on the Canadian site with a connection to this one?

Huge thank you for taking to trouble to connect

In case you folks don't have it....

This link is to Jesse's complete military record, free to view. Click on PDF to open it. It will very, very slow to load.

Hi all!  :)

I found the photo at a local antique mall.  I buy any identified ones that I see and try to reconnect them to their families, so I'm afraid I can't remember at which particular place I purchased it. I can say with confidence, though, that it was somewhere in Southwestern Ontario.  It may have even been purchased close to Watford, Ontario (where Jesse Stilwell was born.)

From my research, I know the standing gentleman, Charles Simmonds, developed Tuberculosis and didn't make it to Europe after enlistment.  He died in January 1918.

Thanks for linking to the service record, polarbear - I have been through that already, and the one for Simmonds also.  Based on those records, the photo would likely have been taken in the late winter or early spring of 1916.

At some point I will post this in other forums, hoping that a living descendant will come across it and contact me.  I like to go as far with the research as I can before doing that, though, so I have a bit more to do on these two gentlemen.  It's not often that I find military photos (and the ones I do find are out of my price range) but this one is charming and I'm glad to have acquired it.

Alison

Jessie Stillwell was born Watford Ontario 1894, he occupation was Bridge Builder
he married 15/10/1919 in Toronto
to
Elizabeth Caroline Edermaniger, often shown as Maniger
Elizabeth Caroline was born 05/06/1899 in England
Hopefully someone might connect with this family, I have no idea if there were any children from this marriage
My husband was related distantly to Elizabeth Caroline Edermaniger
Unfortunately I have no further details
Given time I am sure someone will come forward but it does make me wonder why this lovely photograph was for sale
