My Uncle

I can't find a birth for my late Uncle - Basil Aubrey Betts.  I know he was born in 1924 and that his mother's maiden name was Wray.  As his father was in the army at this time, could he have been born in Ireland?
To get his father's military records from the MOD will cost (I have heard) anyone know how much and what information I will need please?

No I didn't as I can't afford to buy certificates at the moment.  I just wondered if there was any other way - I am a member of ancestry but can't find him on there.

There is a private tree on ancestry which has a picture of him. Unless that is your own tree I would suggest you contact the owner and ask if they have any additional information about him.

Good idea but it is my own tree.  Thanks anyway - I just thought there might be a way of seeing if he was born in Ireland or somewhere else while his father was in the army.

As has been mentioned before all online sources have been checked i.e. births in England/Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Overseas online indexes too.   Zilch!   Either he was born in a country whose records are not available online or, for some reason, if born in UK his birth not registered (although I would have thought that would have come to light at some point in his life and an amendment duly made).

Again, as has been suggested before, the only way to establish where he was born is by getting his death certificate.  Simple as that!

It will be a lot cheaper and quicker getting his death cert than applying for army records, for which you may not be eligible as you aren't the next of kin

It costs £30 for the service records (and can take months I'm told) but can only be done with permission of the next of kin.
