Bit baffled n in need of help please?
« on: Friday 11 July 14 02:13 BST (UK) »
Hi, i am completely new and confused by this so was hoping I could get some help, I'm trying to find out what happened to my great grandfather, my grandad left home at 13 and never heard from his dad since, and is desperate to find out what happened to him,  I have dates and names of great great relatives I would also like to find out about. I read this site has helped a few people, so hoping it can do the same for me.
Thank you for any help  :)

Hello Carla,
   Welcome to rootschat  :)  :)

I'm sure you will get lots of help here.

One rule is that you shouldn't mention people who are living (or may be living) on this forum.  So if you are not sure if your Great Grandad is still alive (and he would be under 105) then do not mention his name.

Perhaps start with the names and dates of your great great relatives.

regards,
   Ros

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

If you start by giving the names (and any other details such as where they may have lived, who they married and so on) of ancestors who would have been adults at the time of the 1911 census you will find a host of rootschatters happy to help search sideways and back into the past.

Once you have posted a few messages you will be able to use the private message function to start enquiring about your great grandfather.

All the best
Philip

Thanks guys, well here's what I know so far, my great grandfather is called William Harker (his dad Ralph Harker) married great grandmother Alice Priestley b 1889
Alice Priestley's mum - Eliza Glossop (b1866)  - married Sam Priestley
Eliza Glossop's mum - Bridget Glossop.
I think they lived around the Haworth area in West Yorkshire
What other kind of info or advice would be useful?
Thanks again in advance

Looking for children of the couple on FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
it gives 2  Harker births whose mother's surname was Priestley-Phyllis b June 1916 North Bierley and Cyril b Sept 1920 Keighley.
You can use FreeBMD to check marriages and deaths for these to see if they are your relatives and what became of them. There are possible marriages in W Yorkshire for both of them. Use the help pages to help you with your searches-you'll find it a very useful site.
There are no records after 1983 so if they died after this time (which they probably have)you won't find them

Welcome Carla  :)

William was 22 when he married Alice on 20 Feb 1915. He was a borer, of 4 Wren St, Haworth.  His father Ralph, a wool comber, was already deceased.  Witnesses were Harold and Louie Whalley.

You may already have all this but in any event it will help us to help you if William's birthdate can be found.

Thanks yes that's right about Cyrill and Phyllis,  this is so interesting finding out about my family history, what other kinda things is it possible to find about them? How far back could my tree be traced? Any other info I can provide helping to find out William Harker? I know he's deceased just wanted to know all about his life after 1924-5?
