john harvey
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 00:32 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the name of the town in Armagh that my great grandfather John Harvey, born may 8, 1836  or 1837, came from. He had a least one brother, Robert, born in 1842. Both immigrated to Canada in the late 1850's or early 1860's.   parents are john harvey (b. 1800, d. 1884) and nancy warner (b. 1805).  I believe the brothers married sisters,
mary ann McDowell (madole on census records) married john and robert married nancy mcdowell.
Canada census shows john and mary ann had a daughter, nancy ann born in ireland in february 1858-61. Also, if there are other siblings that may have immigrated or remained in ireland.  any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Harvey1949.
Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

It should be noted that Nancy, more likely than not, is actually "Anne" or "Agnes";  "Nancy (Nan)" was a pet-form of both.

This looks like the civil registration of John Snr's death:
John HARVEY age 84,
Death Registered Armagh June Qtr 1884

There is a family tree online that has this family.

It says that:
John Sr died 10th May 1884 in Armaghbrague, Armagh.
His wife was Agnes WARNOCK
Their issue was:
Jane  born 1831, died  24 Apr 1887 Armaghbrague
James born 1836, died  27 Jul 1892 Dennistoun, Glasgow
John born 8 May 1837 Armaghbrague Armagh, died  4 May 1899 Hastings, Ontario, Canada
Alexander born 1837, died 15 Jun 1887 Armaghbrague
Margaret born 1840 Armaghbrague, died 1 Dec 1917 Scotch Street, Armagh
Robert born 11 Jun 1842 in  Armaghbrague  died 18 Feb 1916 Hastings, Ontario, Canada
Jonathan born  1845 in  Armaghbrague, Keady, Armagh, died 12 Feb 1925 in  Armaghbrague
Benjamin born 1849 Armagh, died 18 Jun 1926 in  Newtownhamilton, Armagh
Agnes born 1851 Armaghbrague, Keady, Armagh, died 9 Jul 1904 in  Rokeby Green, Armagh
Thomas born  1853 Armaghbrague, Armagh, 2 Mar 1917 in  8 McIntyre Street, Glasgow (Anderston), Scotland

Aside from Thomas, no spouses or issue are listed on the tree  (although there is a photograph of your John Nr with his wife, captioned as John & Mary Ann HARVEY)  but there's quite a bit of info.  I think the tree owner might be a descendant of Thomas. Would be well worth your subscribing to the site (or accessing via a Library) and contacting the tree owner.

According to that tree then, no other immigrations outside of the UK - but there are the two who ended up in Scotland. Their death certs of both will be on Scotland's People, and easily purchased (at a very reasonable rate)  and downloaded directly from there - both parents (mother & father) should be named on Scottish death certs.

The 1901 & 1911 Irish Census is online (for the siblings who were still living at those times)
