Hughes Family Liverpool
« on: Friday 16 July 04 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hi Everybody
My name is Jeannie, and I joined 2 minutes ago,so forgive me if I don't get it right straight away.

I am looking for help in researching  my mother's family.

Mum was born November 1917, at 116 Tunnel Road. West Derby.I believe this was above a pawnbrokers, possibly owned or run by a family member. Can any one throw any light on this ?

Because Hughes is such a common name,I am having quite a problem. Grandma's name was Sarah Hughes born 1879.Her fathers
name was William. Gran married in 1901, and lost a little girl in 1903,
Margaret Isabella Morgan Branwood, aged 16mths. Her death was registered by Isabella Hughes , grandmother of the deceased.

I can find no William and Isabella Hughes in the 1881 or the 1891 census with a Sarah Hughes of the right age to be my gran!!

Perhaps Isabella is a second wife . I have a couple of theories, and if any one can help me with this problem ,I would love to go through them. The address given at the time of  Margarets death was 83 Rydal Street West Derby.

In the 1901 census there is a Isabella Hughes living at 102 Rishton Street, Everton, is that anywhere near Rydal Street?

My Gran married David Edward Morgan Branwood in 1901, on the infants death certificate it was stated that he was also deceased

Many thanks in advance!!

Jeannie

Hi Jeannie, I don't know how far you have got on your fam/tree, but here is some info that might interest you.If you go to the main library Liverpool, 4th floor family history, you can get micro film for marriages, these are the original certificates from the record books, copies of these are 30pence, saves you forking out about £8-00 for copies in the cotton exchange. Anyway try these

Sarah Hughes & david Brandwood St Saviour Sept Qtr 1901.

Also William Hughes & Harriet Davies- Liverpool St Anne 1865.

1881 census Liverpool as follows
31 Skirving St Liverpool, which is off Great Homer St

Head William Hughes 40  born Holywell Wales
Wife  Harriet               40 Liverpool
son    William              15 Liverpool
son    Thomas             13 Liverpool
son    Hugh                  7  Liverpool
dau    Sarah your gran 2  Liverpool
dau    Anne M              4mth Liverpool.

As you can see William married  Harriet that is why you can't find them in the 1881 census.
Concerning Tunnel Rd you could try the Kelly's Directories which are in the same library on micro film.

If I have been of any help and you get stuck, get back in touch. For marriages try Lancashire BMD.   Cheers Eddy

Hello Iria and E.Hoey.

Thankyou both for taking the time to "look up" for me.

Since I posted that first time, I have come a long way, thanks to this wonderful site. I have found my gran, and her siblings on
1881 1891 1901 and her elder brothers on 1871.

Great Grandad William Hughes, married Isabella Dagwell in 1864
at Chester, in 1871, they are both using their correct names,
but by 1881, Isabella has become  Bella, William is using the name  Richard and my gran Sarah, is Ciss!!!!  her family pet name. In 1891, William was deceased, and Isabella is back to her full name, but gran is now Siss.......you can see where the confusion is...but I do now have birth certificates for most of the family, and everything "ties in"

The pawnshop at 116 Tunnel Road, turned out to be a watchmakers and jewellers, owned by one Augustus Ceaser
Bradshaw....who was married to Alice Adelaide, my grans
sister.....it has been  real detective work, and I could not have solved the mystery without help from people on this site,
particularly Floridagirl, who got me lots of info on marriages
from the library.

When I started my research , just over 18months ago, I had no
information at all, other than my grand parents names.I now feel as if I have a history......when I actually held my grandmothers birth certifcate in my hand, I was moved to tears.

My next wish is to find a living relative, every one lost touch during the blitz on Liverpool, and my Gran died in 1940, but I
know that they are out there somewhere....

Many thanks , once again
JeannieR

Hello Eddy.
I am afraid not, But this was the family I thought was mine
originally, but I was on the wrong route!!

If you look at the 1881 census RG11/3655/ folio 49 page 37
34a Canterbury Street Everton...this is my family. Richard is head aged 45 born L'pool. He was actually William Richard, but only used the William on official documents such as the birth and marriage certificates of the children.                                 Bella (my Isabella) aged 35 is his wife

The Sissy Hughes aged 3 is actually my gran,Sarah.
I suppose when you had a few children, and the census came
round, you just gave the names they were known by in the family. Very complicated...but I do have birth certificates for all the children of the family, to verify the facts.....if they are not mine, its cost me a fortune!!

Once again...thankyou very much for trying, I am very grateful

Hi Jeannie
I also have a loose connection to the Hughes in Liverpool. My great-aunt Polly(nee Sourbutts) married a William Hughes in the 1930s and lived in Liverpool most of her life.
Perhaps we are related?

Carol. :)
