Prefabs, Wythenshawe Park
« on: Tuesday 15 July 14 17:26 BST (UK) »
I know I was a home birth in a prefab in 1948 and have a vague memory of the address as being 5 Brookway Road or Drive. Does anyone recognise this address? Incidentally, my middle name is Wythen, as I was born during the first CivicWeek which my Dad helped to organise. He thought the name was a good idea - does anyone else have such a name, or similar?

Hi Honorson and welcome  :D

Brookway Rd is on an old A-Z of Manchester that I have, dated approx 1955.
If you go to the Old Maps website
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Search for Yarwood Avenue, Manchester (nearest  modern street corresponding to Brookway Rd location), click on any house number, then select the 1960 map from the menu on the right hand side of the screen. The 1960 map shows a very clear layout of the prefab estate.

Wythen's a lovely name, although if my dad had named me after his workplace I'd have had Ancoats as a middle name, which doesn't work quite as well...

Hi Barbara, thanks. I was told that we moved out when I was 18 months to Spark Road where I lived until 1957. That house is still standing but sadly, Royal Oak School is not. I remember Mr Brett, Miss Wiggins, Mr Bryce and either Miss Piggott or Miss Whalley - one of them was at Royal Oak and one was at my next school, St. Paul's, Walkden and I can't remember who was where! St Paul's has also been flattened. I've not lived in Wythenshawe since 1957.

Hi,

I have a 1957 The Wythenshawe Recorder Year Book which contains a large map.

Brookway Road is on the side of Wythenshawe Park.
Where you have Moor Road meeting Altrincham Road is, the next road was called Brook Road and then there was Brookway Road.
It does state on the map that it was temporary houses,

Now there is a high rise block of flats and next to it is a post office and chemist.

Newly built Metrolink has also arrived changing the appearance of the junction of Moor Rd, Southmoor Rd and Altrincham Rd.

Wythenshawe is forever changing :-\

There used to be another road running through, and down to Baguley Brook, called Moorecott Road....  I was born and number 59.  I have been searching for pictures of the Wythenshawe prefabs specifically but they are always other areas and said these are similar.
Main Stream:- Gregory, Bridgwater, Dazely.
Tributaries:- Broomhead, Warner, Eyre.
Areas: UK- Derbyshire 1750-1900, Manchester 1900- now,
India- Jubblepore, Kirkee, Lucknow. (Bridgwater/Dazely 1890-1925)
