English Cemetery at Meggen, Lucerne, Switzerland
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 18:24 BST (UK) »
Hi

As I live near Lucerne I made a trip to the English Cemetery in Meggen near Lucerne, Switzerland.
I took pictures of the old headstones, on most of them you can still read the inscriptions.
The inscriptions on the headstones sometimes also mention the circumstances of death.

Hi

I have just found the report of the boating accident on the Lake Lucerne in which perished Herbert Derwent who is burried on the English Cemetery in Meggen near Lucerne.

"Evening Express" of Thursday June 30 1898 (on Welsh Newspapers Online)
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3277251/3277253/57/Lucerne

The inscription on his headstone on the English Cemetery in Meggen:

Herbert Hanson Derwent, The beloved son of
Eusebius Mary Derwent of Middlesbro, England
Drowned near Meggen 29 June 1898 age 21
In trying to save another.

Family of Eusebius and Mary Derwent in Middlesbro, Yorkshire

Emilie Schuler who was also drowned in the same boating accident is
mentioned on the cemetry list of 1905 but I don't have her on my own list.

Emilie Schuller, born 26 July 1867, drowned at Lucerne, 29 June 1898

Hi

I also found a newspaper report of the accident of Thomas Dunnill of Dublin,
who "accidentally drowned when crossing a bridge in course of construction
at Lucerne 19 July 1870. Remains removed from the oldtown cemetery on
26 September 1903" as his headstone in Meggen says.

The Flintshire Observer, Friday July 29 1870
http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3749440/3749443/51/Lucerne

By the way the bridge was the old Seebrücke which crossed the
River Reuss where the river leaves the Lake Lucerne.

I also found a newspaper report of the accident in the mountains
of Arthur Macnamara, also buried at Meggen (see list of 1905).

Arthur Macnamara, barrister-at-law, born 24 April 1861, died 16. August 1890.
Killed by a fall on the lower slopes of the Düssistock (Maderanertal, Canton Uri)

South Wales Daily News, 22 August 1890

Hi

Nine years later I revisited the English Cemetery in Meggen near Lucerne. I took pictures of some of the old headstones (the same headstones as last time), but there were also some headstones where you could barely read the inscriptions. I also found three graves which I didn't see in 2014, they are situated near the chapel / church.

Coat of Arms (four parts: two towers, two lions)
Hedwig Vivien 1889 - 1956
Amy Paul Vivien 1893 - 1970

In Loving Memory of
Lewis Hare Clayton 1872 - 1921
Eva Clayton 1888 - 1935

To the sacred Memory of Wilhelma von Roeder
Born Berlin 6. IX. 1880 - died Lucerne 4.II.1891
