searching for relatives near Roscommon Ballaghaderreen McDermott
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 19:11 BST (UK) »
Hi, I live in the USA and my gg grandfather was from Ireland. Recently I did 2 DNA tests (23andme and FTDNA) and found another McDermott descendant. We are estimated to be 3rd or 4th cousins. Her great grandmother McDermott married in Ballaghaderreen in 1841.  We suspect my gg grandfather McDermott and her great grandmother McDermott were either siblings or cousins. This is the first and only indication of where my Irish ancestors lived in Ireland.  I am hoping to connect with anyone in the Ballaghaderreen area (or any McDermott) in Ireland, who is interested in searching.  My gg grandfather was Andrew H McDermott, born about 1822.  He went to Canada about 1846 (Maybe earlier).  In Canada he married an Irish girl Ann Phelan. In about 1870 they moved from Canada to the USA. I would love to hear from anyone in Ballaghaderreen area.

Hello & welcome to rootschat.  There are various resources to begin your research.  www.nationalarchives.ie has for early records Tithe Applotment & Griffith Valuation records Also has 1901 & 1911 Censuses .  For Roman Catholic parish records i.e Baptisms & Marriages www.registers.nli.ie   The surname McDermott seems very prelavent in Roscommon area. www.historicgraves.ie has several burials in various roscommon graveyards for McDermotts. My great great grandfather (Andrew McDermott abt 1821-1896), his  sister was Elizabeth McDermott (or often McDermottroe) and she married  Thomas J Plunkett on 14 Feb 1841.  He did not survive the famine and the 3 children were sent individually to North America as funds became available. Elizabeth Plunkett came last sometime in the 1850s.

There were more siblings that we do not know about I'm sure.  And we strongly suspect half siblings, but we don't have concrete information.  We are fairly certain the parents of Andrew and Elizabeth were Matthew McDermottroe (born about 1785 died before Sept 1846) and Elizabeth Costello.  We do not have much more information.  Any help appreciated.
