Can anyone find Walter?
« on: Friday 18 July 14 23:21 BST (UK) »
I have Walter Barleycorn born in Clapham Surrey (London) in 1829.
His parents are John and Elizabeth.

I can find him on the 1841 and 51 censuses with his family, but never again in England.

He next turns up in NSW in 1852 - on a list of unclaimed post.
Then on an alphabetical government list as number 14 in Beechworth Victoria in 1857.

And after that nothing. Can anyone find him again please, marriage, death, passage back to England.......anything  ;D

It's such an unusual combination of names I have no doubt that it's the same chap.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Carol  :)

Please would you explain further the nature of the government list, its source and reference etc.

Can you post the link to the unclaimed mail in 1852.

To be exactly correct, Walter BARLEYCORN is not with his family in 1851.
He is at 47 Church St, Mitcham Surrey, a Vicarage, where he is a footman in a large household of Henry F. WHARTON who is the vicar of Mitcham. There is a large group of assorted servants and domestic workers.

There are a number of children, not all of them the offspring of the vicar and his wife Mary and they are aged under 14 years.

He was born Tooting, Surrey. Is that the same as Clapham?

In 1851 his parents John and Elizabeth BARLEYCORN aged 56 and 60 respectively, are without other family members at 45 Salvatore St, Tooting Surrey. John is a gardener.

In 1841, when Walter is 11 years old, he is living with his parents and sister Elizabeth who is 22.

For interest's sake, in 1861, the vicar, Henry WHARTON, either is elsewhere or has died and Mary, whose status is wife, is living with her children at 35 Willesden Villas, Willesden Middlesex.
She is a "landed proprietor" as occupation.

The large servant entourage (including Walter BARLEYCORN) has disappeared as have the youngsters whose surnames were not WHARTON.

A few moments scan-style research on my part reveals the Vicarage was a small private school for boys where the reverend WHARTON  tutored them most particularly in the classics.

Charles DARWIN sent his son there and indeed William DARWIN can be seen on the household listing in 1851.

None of this moves us any closer to Walter BARLEYCORN of course ::)

Yes, Sue, Tooting and Clapham very close about 3 miles.

You probably have Walter's baptism at Tooting Graveney, 6 December, 1829, parents John (a gardener)and Elizabeth Barleycorn, living at Tooting.  I think the church may be St Nicholas.

Can't see any references to him in Australia, though, Judith

Sue

Both of these references I found on Find MY Past.

Thanks for finding further refs to him at other dates.

Interesting about Charles Darwin sending his son to the same school  ;D

I do know the fate of both John and Thomas Barleycorn.

But Walter seems to vanish?

Regards

Carol
