Johney Tyrrell, Ireland/Texas
« on: Sunday 20 July 14 11:56 BST (UK) »
The following is a transcript of a letter  which I have, it is from from Johney Tyrrell to his sister and father  in Ireland:-

Houston, Texas, 2218 Singleton.

Dear Sister and Father,

Just a few lines to let you know I am quite well and hoping you are the same. Times are very hard in this country right now but I am working loading ships I am a foreman.  I load some ships going to Dublin sometimes.  I will be 57 years old in November I don't look but about 40.  I am going to write to Minnie and Michael today.  I have all the photos your sent me but I am going to ask Minnie to send me one of Violet is Henry married yet I guess Frank is married by now.  Send me Letty's address in Glasgow and I will write to her for she was the only girl in the world that I ever loved.  I a'nt got no news to tell you but remember me to all.

I remain as ever your brother

Johney,

Address: 2218 Singleton Street, Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

The above is a letter  was written by my great great uncle Johney  which was written in the early 1920's - he was one of 5 children his surname was Tyrrell and came from Ireland.

He wrote the letter to his sister Margaret (Maggie Frank) and his Father who was Frank Tyrrell.  He referred to Minnie and Michael who were his sister in law and brother respectively, Violet was his niece, Henry and Frank were his nephews (Henry was my grandfather)

He referred to Letty who I think was a distant relation (I stand to be corrected on that)..  The address that he wrote from in Texas - the house was built in the 1920's -  as far as I am aware he died in the U.S.A. if anyone knows anything about Johney or what happened to him while there can you please leave a message!

Thank you.

Homelands.

So Frank married to Elizabeth ( but she was not Johney mother)  both were Ship Owner born in and living in Co Wicklow, Frank's father Micheal was a Master Mariner and Maggie would have been 20 years younger than Johney

Letty,  maybe Letty Fearon who would have been his step sister, daughter of Elizabeth?

I am assuming you have all that information as yu are asking about Johney and what happen to him, you, so you need to look on the USA census and SSDI for him

Just in case you haven't got all this already  :)

Letitia ( Letty) married a Edwin Gillard Coleman who was born Philadelphia, he was a clerk of works in Ireland and younger than Letty.

Frank and Elizabeth married in 1900, so Maggie was Johney's half sibling

The family were Church of Ireland and they lived in Bridge Street Arklow Co Wicklow

Thanks to everyone who read the post and commented on it - can't believe the response in  such a short space of time.

Iluleah
As far as I am aware Frank Tyrrell Senior was married twice and Maggie was born in 1885, no idea yet of Johne's date of birth/death.

Letty was Letty Kearon - The Tyrrell, Kearons and Halls were all related - her name is recorded as Fearon on the census but should read Kearon.

Letty as you said was married to a Mr. Gillard Coleman she was born in 1877 - will up load a photo of her when I can find it.

Priscilla thank you for the look up but I don't think it is the person as Johney's father was Frank Tyrrell Senior and not John.... although the dates would seem to be right, so I will look into that, thanks again.

Heywood
Thanks for your post - I was unable to upload the original for some reason which is a pity - great response to just the transcript!

The search goes on.

I have uploaded a photograph of Johney's brothers - Michael who married Minnie.  Harry and Frank who both died at sea.

Also attached is the 4 generations of the Tyrrells
Baby Frank is Johney's Nephew
Michael is Johney's brother
Frank is Johney's Father
Michael is Johney's Grandfather.

Could this be the baptism date of Jonney & his brother Michael I see from the 1901/1911 Ireland census that Frank Tyrrell was living  in Arklow Wicklow

http://www.rootschat.com/links/018sc/ - 1901

http://www.rootschat.com/links/018sd/ - 1911

baptism Wicklow Ireland parents Frank TYRRELL & Anne

Elizabeth 16 Jan 1872 Arklow
Michael 24 June 1873
John 12 Nov 1875
Francis 19 April 1878
Henry 2 Nov 1880

the 1901 census shows Frank's father is named Michael

I wonder if this might be Frank's marriage to Anne in 1868 Dublin, Ireland - they both appear to have the same surname Tyrrell - as do their father's
