Heckingham House, Norfolk
« on: Monday 21 July 14 03:33 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help me with finding list of inmates in Heckingham House in 1802. I am looking for Sarah Chittleburgh and possibly any children she may have had with her. I believe Sarah died in Heckingham House in October, 1802 and was buried at Topcroft, her home village. regards Joan

Looks possible to me.

Burial, 15 Oct 1802, Widow of Benjamin, age 46, abode Heckingham House

SAMUEL Chittleburgh Baptised 11 Jan 1801, St Margarets, Topcroft, Mother SARAH
Notes, Illegitimate Offspring Of Samuel Barrett With Sarah Chittleburgh A Widow With 3 Children

To BENJAMIN/SARAH Chittleburgh nee WRIGHT, St Margarets;
JAMES, 25 April 1779, Buried 10 Nov 1780 age 18mths, Son of Benjamin
JAMES, 2 Sept 1781
BENJAMIN, 22 Feb 1784
ROBERT, 23 April 1786
ELIZABETH, 23 March 1788
WILLIAM, 29 Aug 1790
PHILIP, 29 Aug 1792
JOHN, 26 Aug 1792

Now there are these Burials, House of Industry (Union Workhouse) , Heckingham;
JOHN Chettleburgh, 30 Jan 1794, age 1yr 3mths, abode Topcroft
Notes, From 13 Oct 1792 date recorded is given as "when died" instead of "when buried"
PHILIP Chettleburgh, 16 Feb 1794 age 1yr 3mths, same other details

They were Buried Topcroft;
JOHN, 2 Feb 1794, Son of Benjamin/Sarah
PHILIP, 16 Feb 1794, Infant, Son of Benjamin/Sarah

All on FreeREG (use soundex as spelling varies)

Trish :)

Looks like Sarah may have been in and out of the Workhouse over a few years.

Hi Trish and a big Thank You for all the information and a quick reply.  I am a descendant of her son James b. 1781 who joined the Royal Navy in 1800 and emigrated to South Australia with his wife and family in 1836. I have always wondered what happened to his mother Sarah after her husband Benjamin died in 1793. You have filled in a lot of gaps. Thanks again. Regards and best wishes Joan
