Nethersole House :
« on: Monday 21 July 14 15:33 BST (UK) »
Hi All…

I’ve a 3xGr called James Dennett born abt 1796 in Charing, Kent.   On his 1851 census, (West Ashford / Calehill 5a-28 folio 1621/125/8) he’s down as Groom-Servant and living at Nethersole House.

Surfing the Internet, I’ve found only two Nethersole Houses…, one in Womenswold which was demolished in 1786; and another on Dover Road in Canterbury  =

Now…, something I don’t understand !   If the URL is correct, this house is in Canterbury…, not Charing.
Is it possible that the Charing census included Canterbury ?

Thanks in advance…, Iain.

The enumeration district for that bit of the 1851 covers solely part of the parish of Charing.  It is also possible that the Womenswold house and the Dover Road Canterbury house are one and the same given that Womenswold lies just off the Dover Road.  Thus the pic is most unlikely to be in Charing.
I would guess, as the parliamentarian Sir Francis Nethersole (thanks Google) came from Womenswold, that Dover Road house is named for him.  As that name crops up elsewhere, perhaps the various houses are all named after him?

The pictured house is in Canterbury - Dover Street, not Dover Road. Looking at the census, it appears that Nethersole House, Charing was at that time a row of labourers' cottages. It may have been a farm house that had come down in the world, as many did. I believe the Nethersoles were part of the much interlinked gentry of Kent, so may have been in Charing as well as Womenswold.

Hi !   Thanks to both of you !   Very kind !
Nonetheless…, lol..., I’m still a little confused !

On the census, he's living at Nethersole House and his employment as Groom 'relates' to the address.   Next door (one page backwards) is a workhouse.   This means, at the time, it doesn’t seem to be a simple “row of cottages.”
Then, returning to the census district…, Dover Street Canterbury is miles away from Charing !

Yours, confused…, Iain.

I have just checked the internet and there is a Charing and district history society. Just enter charing history. They may be able to solve your puzzle.

The dwellings on the previous page you refer to are in fact cottages known as "The Old Workhouse".  By 1851, the West Ashford workhouse at Hothfield Common had been built, taking over the responsibilties of Charing and a number of other earlier workhouses.

(Coincidentally and totally irrrelevantly, my grandfather was born in a house in Essex that was originally a workhouse).

If I may suggest - discard the Canterbury angle,    concentrate on discovering (perhaps with the help of the locals as Top of the Hill suggests) what you can about the Charing Nethersole House. (while also ignoring the fact that there is a Nethersole connection in the midlands).  Good luck!

Thanks once again to both of you.   ;)
As you say, perhaps the best thing is to investigate the Charing History Society.
If I find anything of interest, I'll add another thread.

Have a nice afternoon..., Iain.
