Harris form Finkiltagh
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 14:37 BST (UK) »
Hi All
My name is Eileen Harris living in Canada. My great grandfather was Johnston Harris from Ireland.
He and his wife Margaret Rea are buried in our family plot close by. The inscriptions read that Johnston was born Jan 1, 1837 and Margaret Aug 3, 1836.  Many years ago, I hired the Irish Gen Society to find them. The only match they found was a Johnston Harris and Margaret Ray? (Rea) married in Carncastle in 1855. This works with the birth of their children. The record said Margaret was from Lisnahay (makes sense) and Johnston from Kiltagh? The society figures that it may have been Finkiltagh, as there were so many Harris's there. It also stated that Johnston's father was Robert Harris. I have the family tree for all of the Harris/Kyles of the area. Robert, Thomas, Mary Jane would be siblings if I am correct. Has anyone any info on Johnston? I will be in Portglenone next month and would like to be looking in the right county!! I would like to have more evidence than just my own guess work. Many thanks ahead!
Eileen

Hi...Thanks for your very quick reply. Yes, I have seen the other posts and have been through them with a fine tooth comb, but still no mention of a Johnston.

Hi All
I have just returned from Ireland and spent a couple of days at the PRONI office. I didn't have time to go to Portglenone as hoped, however, I was delighted to find my great grandfather's baptismal record. He was indeed part of the Finkiltagh / Tullynahinion bunch. The 2nd Presb church records from Portglenone showed a large number of children baptized whose father was either David or Robert Harris, whom I gather were brothers. Johnston Harris was baptized on May 25, 1837, which fits in with his birthday, which was Jan 1, 1837. Unfortunately their mothers were not mentioned in these records, but everything seems to line up. I am really happy to have solid evidence that I am indeed a Portglenone Harris. If anyone is willing, related or not, to share further info with me, I would be very grateful. When I clean up some lose ends, I will eventually make my tree public on Ancestry. Thanks...Eileen

Yes, he did. They were married in 1855 at the Presbyterian meeting house in Cairncastle. They had their first two children before immigrating to Canada.

I have Johnston and Margaret Rea in a family tree I am a guest on.
Son John marrying a Catherine Kompf
and Grandson Russell

Johnston had a sister Jane
He had a sister Mary Jane who married my gggrandfather but they had no family
Brothers, James, Robert and Thomas.

I had not noticed this man as he isn't a direct connection of my own but he is related to many people here.

There were and are Johnston descendants and current nearby and they were in the Killyless area nearby and maybe Johnston was named for his mother
I'll run that past the owner of the tree but I'm only guessing

Thanks for your reply. I am Russell's daughter, Eileen. My tree is the private one originally named Irish Harris family tree. Maybe you are already a guest on my tree. I have since added a few other names to the title. There was one other private tree when I started that had some Portglenone Harrises on it. That gentleman, Neil, was kind enough to share with me. At that point, I wasn't sure that Johnston was one of the Finkiltagh bunch, as the only thing I had to go by was his marriage record to Margaret. He was in no other family trees, Johnston was the only one of the siblings who came to Canada, so that may explain him being forgotten. When I went to PRONI a year ago in August, I found Johnston's baptism entered in the 2nd Portglenone Pres church records. He was born 1 Jan 1837 and his baptism was recorded in May of that year, so I am fairly confident it is him. At that point, I sat down at their computer and entered all of the baptisms that I had found for both David and Roberts Harris's children. I put together a family tree based on these baptisms, along with other peoples' input from Ancestry. I can't guarantee total accuracy, just hoping other folks like yourself can straighten out my mistakes. There are only about 4 trees on ancestry following Johnston's line, and I am in close touch with all but one. My reason for staying private is that I don't want my tree to mislead people, I am still working on verifying things. There will definitely be more trips to Ireland in the future. Feel free to contact me on Ancestry, my user name is eileenrharris, I will gladly send you an invite to my tree. I have toyed around with the idea that Johnston's mother Jane had the maiden name of Johnston, but have absolutely nothing on her except for her death certificate. Her married name was used, of course. Johnston was not a common first name, so it makes sense, but I know better than to assume....
