WINN Stepen 1791app - 1874
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 15:39 BST (UK) »
On each of the census my 3xGreatgrandfather gives his birthplace as Wells next the sea. Other than the various census I only have the Parish Register when he married Hannah BROWN in Hertfordshire on 23rd February 1919 so at some stage he must have made the journey from Norfolk to the Hitchin area. I have searched the Wells parish registers without success. Can anyone suggest anywhere else I can look?

Do you mean 1818 for the marriage?

Stephen Winn to Hannah Brown in Ippollitts, Hertfordshire both of St Ippollitts parish, married by banns with witnesses Elizabeth Turner and Robert Stapleton , all four made their mark.

I would suggest your next step is to look in neighbouring parishes to Wells. Note down any Winn families in Wells, and in the neighbouring parishes, that are having children around the right time. Maybe his parents moved around a bit.

Bear in mind that he may not have been christened at all. Or his family may have been non-conformist rather than C of E.

Does he ever have any helpful rellies staying with him on a census - a brother or nephew or something, that might help link him up as you go further back?

Any Winn Wills?

Thats just a few ideas.

Yes I believe there was some non conformist connection as several of his grandchildren from one of his sons were baptised at the Hitchin chapel.

There are lots of Winns here but no Stephen - do you know of any siblings for him?

Unfortunately I have not found any siblings and there does not seem to be any thread running through the names of his children and grandchildren.
