You say you have Arthur's birth certificate and that his mother is shown as plain Euphemia Looby born Arbroath.   Who is listed as his father?

I ask because John T. Louby (husband of Euphemia born Arbroath) appears to have died in Leeds, UK in 1913 although cannot find anything of the family in previous census index.

UK Passenger lists leaving UK shows:

Mrs. E. Lauby   29 who left London 7/3/1906 for Wellington, NZ on the 'Ionic'.

Jno. Lauby  10 left London 23/8/1906 for Wellington, NZ, again on the 'Ionic'.

The former seems to have been travelling alone, as indeed does son John.   The page showing the latter does not indicate who he was travelling with as his passenger no. is out of context with the others listed.  Presumably he would have been in the car of someone.

So, if this is indeed Euphemia and her son John, looks like she may have left husband John.

Alas, it does sound like Arthur was indeed illegitimate.  One has to wonder whether the next child Kenneth in 1910 was also illegitimate or whether he was the child of Henry Joseph Darroch who Euphemia later married.

Perhaps Arthur and Kenneth shared the same father - the 'unknown' red haired/bearded man that Arthur remembered.

Would be interesting to know who Euphemia was going to when she arrived in New Zealand.
