William Henry Mather (AKA Henry Mather)
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 20:32 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm researching a branch of the Mather family from Henley back to Salford, via Grimsby.

Grimsby is clear enough but the problem comes in finding the correct parentage of William Henry Mather in Salford (or the surrounding area), as there are so many Mathers there.

This is a brief summary of William:
Born about 1870, Salford, Lancashire
Married Harriett Netherton, Widow (nee Stokes) 7 Dec 1893, Wesleyan Chapel, Arlington Street, Grimsby (in 1893 William was a 23 year old fisherman living at 152 Guildford Street, Grimsby)
1901 and 1911 residing at 269 Weelsby Street, Grimsby
Died 20 Jun 1949 Grimsby, Lincolnshire
Buried Scartho Rd, Cemetery, Grimsby
Naming 1893 Marriage Certificate: William Henry
Naming 1901 Grimsby Census: William Henry
Naming 1911 Grimsby Census: Henry Mather
Naming 1949 Scartho Rd, Cemetery, Grimsby: Henry Mather on gravestone

The only thing I have to by is that (apparently) on his marriage certificate his father is named as Thomas Mather, a deceased packer. I've found a few potential candidates but none of them seem quite right.

Please can anyone help me with this conundrum?

Chris

Thanks Jan. The occupation is a Lurry man (equivalent to a lorry driver of the present day). Perhaps he became a packer in later years. Happily, this is the same family as I was drawn toward as being most likely.

Spendlove, Pheno and Jan,

You are all very, very, good at this. You were correct, Pheno; his parents are listed on his service record (despite them both "pushing up the daisies") and it confirms that Thomas and Pauline are indeed the parents (as suggested by you all). Fantastic to get corroboration on this as I  had already traced Thomas' lineage back another two generations. Rock and roll!

Kind regards,
Chris

Was William's dad the Thomas Mather who was in 1851 living in Regent Street Salford with parents Robert and Ellen Mather? I'd read "Porter"  as "Packer" there at first?
