Stuck tracing John Sheldrake
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 23:22 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I have been struggling to find any information on my fathers side of the family. My grandfather John Sheldrake we believe was born around 1898, and siblings were Rose,  George, Sid and Ernest ... I can locate John Sheldrake marriage to my grandmother Alice Andrews in 1925 in Hendon London, along with his naval medal role list and his death register. But for the life of me I cannot find anything else out , we believe that the family was split up following the death of the parents my grandmother said that they was in barnado home, but having wrote and paid them money, they have no records of any of them. I do know that Sid and Ernest emigrated to New Zealand but when I do not know. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, I really would live to give my father the information that he has been searching for , for years

Hi and thanks for the quick reply ! This could be correct, John is a strong family name, including my father and brother. Can I access this information online??? I am on a*****y ... I am really trying to try and find something that ties them all in together and some sort of information for a starting point for that side of the family. I will check with my father re: Sydney having a son called John and get back to you ... thank you !!

Hi again, it is possible the family came from the Norfolk/ Suffolk area as the Sheldrake name crops up very often there, for example their is an Rose Sheldrake aged 4 b Ipswich shown as adopted daughter to a John B & Matilda Girling in 1901, possibly the one born 1897 in the 1911 Islington?

Hi,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat!

These look like Syd's son John's birth index record & Syd's marriage index record both from FreeBMD:

Birth
Sheldrake, John S G; Sept Qtr 1922; Islington; MMS - Sylvester; Volume 1b Page 548

MMS = Mother's Maiden Surname.

Marriage
Sheldrake, Sydney H to Sylvester, Caroline R; June Qtr 1920; Islington; Volume 1b Page 489

Considering that the address that they gave on the passenger record that Keyboard86 found was in Highbury, I suspect that the above records may well be correct. That is if this is the right Sydney of course.

Births of the other siblings proving tricky, neither do I see an Ernest departing to New Zealand.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

great, thanks for your help, I will keep exploring... I have found out that Rose Sheldrake married William MacDonald on April 16th 1921 , now this lists her father being a Sydney Sheldrake (deceased) and was witnessed by. Sidney H Sheldrake ( presuming her brother) the marriage took place in Holloway London. Thank you so much for your help, I really do appreciate it

Would it be unusual if siblings were split up due to parents being deceased to remain in contact with one another?? Maybe this is where I am going wrong?? They all remained in touch and all knew one another, hense why I thought they must have stayed close?? Sorry am new to genealogy
