Allan Steel Death date confusion
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 16:45 BST (UK) »
Hello

Allan Steel was baptised on 12th November 1758 at Stapleton parish church.

He married Elinor Donaldson in 1782 with no identifiable children as I know of

There is a death date in 1844 for Allan, his birth date given as 1754.

Is the Allan on the death record the one whom was baptised in 1758. What was Allan's birth year on his baptism record, if there was one?

my thanks

Hi

Remember, for the 1841 census, ages were rounded up and down to the nearest five years. This could
the reason for the discrepancy you have.

On the 1841, adult ages (those over15) were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years ;D

Or at least that was the instruction given to enumerators! :D

right now I remember, the 1841 census is not as useful as the 1851 census due to age rounding up and no indication of relationships. But it doesn't give us any indication if the Allan that died in 1844 was the one whom was baptized in 1758.

I can't see the relevance of censuses to the present topic.  :-\
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

No birth date on the baptism record.

Allan Steel buried at Kirklinton 19 March 1844 - born 1754 and aged 90 years.

Allan Steel on the 1841 census  Kirklinton - aged 85 years. Pauper.

I donīt understand why you are asking for his baptism date when you already tell us that in your first post. Where did you find that date?

Surely the question here is have we only one Alan Stapleton or two? Or am I confused?

He is looking for the birth year. The baptism record does not give the birth year just the baptism date.

 ???

But baptism records rarely give a birth date?

True, some enlightened vicars add the birth date, but it isn't normal! ;D
