Current City name for Bosksweise Hanover Germany
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 00:46 BST (UK) »
In a 1921 Passport the place of birth was stated as Bocksweise Hanover Germany.

Using findagrave or ancestry cities and regions what would the name of the city be today.  Am trying to update a memorial on findagrave and add a birth place on ancestry.

Thanks for the help!

Hi, different place but same problem My ancestor Andreas Raap in the 1861 Scottish Census gave his place of birth as Alphinstart. I presume "start" was a mis-spelling of "stadt", but the nearest I can find to Alphinstadt is Altenstadt. Do you have any ideas? Andrew (Andreas) was a pork butcher and many of them came from Wurttemburg. Andreas came over from Germany between 1851 and 1856

There might be more places, which are not listed here:

Raap =? Raab

Best regards
Rudolf

A very import checkpoint is:

What has been the religion of your German immigrant?

- Roman-Catholic
- Lutheran
- Reformed (or Calvinist)
- other

Having a certain faith might exclude a lot of German regions ...

Good luck
Rudolf

For example:

Württemberg
Lutheran since 1556 (?)
- Altenstadt (Geislingen an der Steige) - no Catholic church up to now
- Stadt Geislingen: Catholic church since 1869

To find a Catholic in this region before 1869, you have to look at the small county of Rechberg.
- Donzdorf town & some villages
   https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafen_von_Rechberg#Ehemalige_Besitzungen_.28Auszug.29

Altensteig
- Lutheran since 1556, first Catholic church established 1927

Hesse
- own church (Landeskirche with stress on Lutheran) since the time of Martin Luther

Bavaria
- Roman-Catholic all over the country
- Lutherans in Franconia / Franken
- Palatinate: Reformed (United with Lutherans since 1818);
- - Speyer (town) & other: Lutheran
- - Speyer (area): Roman-Catholic
- - ...
- - Lutheran & Catholic immigrants since 1698
- - Mennonites in special regions of the later Bavarian Palatinate

Roman-Catholic (before 1869?):
Start with Bavaria! - but every rule has exceptions ...

Good luck
Rudolf

NB: I will add a Bavarian village in the reply above
