Identify airman Dick Jeffrey Lehmann
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 09:29 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I would really like some help with identifying the man in this World War 2 photo. He was said to be Dick Jeffrey ( Geoffrey) Lehmann. I have two photos, either could be him. Any details about his uniform etc would be great. Thank you.

Hi

In the first photo, although he is wearing pilots wings, he is in the Army as he is a Second Lieutenant.
Which could mean he was in the Army Air Corps.

In the second photo, the chap seems to wearing what looks like an Armoured Corps Shoulder Flash.

Thanks Gene Chaser. Do you have any idea how I could trace him back to the Army Air Corps?
I know he was in Cairo, and Vanderbijl Park ,Transvaal South Africa. But that is all I know. I would dearly like to confirm his identity.
Thanks for your help :)

Hi

Unfortunately I can't help you there. First of all, you would need his service number to even start to look for him. This would be of no use to you if he survived the war, it would help somewhat if he had not survived by using the C.W.G.C. site which list all of the troops that died.
I have old photo's like yours that I would like to know who they were.

Thank you both. I have contacted the SADF and the SAAF before, and they could not help me. So I know he is a 2nd Lt, in the South African Army, who flew with the RAF. I thought I could trace him via the RAF but to no avail. I thought I might see which battalions flew with the RAF but I think this is rather a needle in a haystack. The man in the second photo, I have been advised that he could be from the 6th South African Armoured Division who were in Portofino,Italy. But without another photograph I can't state who is for sure. The only Lehmann listed in the Roll of Honour , was a private R.W.Lehmann , First City Cape Town Highlanders, who died at age 25 on 16-5-1945. I found this information in the book by James Bourhilll 'Come back to Portofino.'
James tells me this cannot be my Mr Lehmann. I have one more clue - a birth certificate states he was born in London or New York and he was 24 in 1944.

This may be him, "Geoffrey" - the IWM have a recording!

REEL 1 Background in Aldershot, GB, 1921-1940: family; education; employment in the soft furnishings trade; attempting to join the Royal Navy. Aspects of period as flight mechanic with RAF in GB, South Africa and Egypt, 1940-1948: enlistment in RAF; call up to RAF, 7/1940; training as airframe flight mechanic; servicing Handley Page Hampdens and Bristol Beauforts at RAF Wick; posting to No 22 Training School, RAF at Vereeniging, South Africa; posting to Kibrit on Suez Canal in Egypt.

His actual service records would probably still be with the MOD.
