Unknown Etches Photograph
« on: Monday 04 August 14 10:39 BST (UK) »
While researching my family history I came across this old photograph and I wonder if anyone could identify the uniform and provide a date for when the photo might have been taken. The back of the photo says:

Edgar Prout 76 St. Pauls Road, Camden Square, Camden Town, NW

Many thanks

Edgar Prout was at this address from 1888 - 1900.
I'm thinking he's maybe Hussars.
I think you need to put a link to this on the armed forces board. topic moved

Is this a Military Uniform?
« Reply #2 on: Monday 04 August 14 13:23 BST (UK) »
Hello, can anybody help me identify the uniform in this photograph please? I've learnt that the photographer, Edgar Prout, was only at the Camden address from 1888 to 1900. As there are no markings on the uniform I'm wondering whether it was a kind of stage costume rather than a military uniform.

A Lancer regiment. Perhaps 9th (Queen's) or 12th (Prince of Wales's) Royal Lancers...

Looks like a Lancers uniform. If it is a copy it is a very good one.

Good evening,

5th Royal Irish Lancers, 9th Lancers or 12th Lancers. All had dark blue jackets with red collar and cuffs and a red plastron.

16th Lancers had red jacket with blue collar and cuffs and blue plastron.

17th Lancers had dark blue jacket with white collar and cuffs and white plastron.

21st Lancers had dark blue jacket with pale blue collar and cuffs and pale blue plastron.

The plastron is the panel buttoned onto the front of the jacket.

Quite interested in this post/photo as my great great grandfather was a Troop Sergeant in the 12th POW Lancers!
