Albert John Oliver PERKINS was born 19 Jul 1900 in Kinsale,Co Cork,Ireland. His father, another Albert, was a Coastguard, born 1870 Devonport,Devon. The PERKINS family in Devonport had a long record of working in the Dockyard or service with the Royal Navy. Albert John Oliver’s mother was Mary Grace BLIGH who was born in 1876 in St Austell,Cornwall. Albert Snr and Mary Grace later lived in St Neot,Cornwall

Albert J O was put on course for a Naval career at an early age. The 1911 census records Albert as being enrolled at the Hiberian Marine School in Dublin.

Albert J O PERKINS died on 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Albert served as a Boy 1St Class on HMS Queen Mary. He was 16 years old. Late in the afternoon of 31st May, HMS Queen Mary was hit by enemy fire and disintegrated when both forward magazines exploded. The ship sank with a loss of about 1,266 crew members. Only a very few survived the sinking.
