Adult Orphan Institution, St Andrew's Place, Regent's Park, London
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 06:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for records for the Adult Orphan Institution, St Andrew's Place, Regent's Park, London specifically for any information related to the background of Mary Bowen.  Mary was listed in the 1851 Census as  Mary Bowen, 16, b. Pembroke, Haverfordwest. Wales

As this is an orphanage it may be that there are family records which would enable me to determine if this is the Mary Bowen I seek.

Have my fingers crossed that some one may know where these records are kept or if they were kept at all.

Still looking, but I did find this:

Victorian London - Charities - Adult Orphan Institution

ADULT ORPHAN INSTITUTION, ST. ANDREW'S PLACE, REGENT'S PARK. Instituted 1818, for the relief and education of the friendless and unprovided orphan daughters of clergymen of the Established Church, and of military and naval officers. No girl is admitted under 14 or above 17, and none remain after 19. Annual subscribers of one guinea have one vote.

The Institution was renamed in the late 1800's as the Princess Helena College, and it moved from Regent's Park to Preston, Hertfordshire.

Was your Mary the daughter of a clergyman, military officer or naval officer?

Yes - her father was in the Royal Navy and died in 1848 under tragic circumstances leaving her mother  facing financial hardship.
