Hi!
I'm not sure if i can be much help but here is what i have on the Mantles. The oldest people in my tree are Ricard Mantle Born 1755 Llanbadarn Ffynydd, Radnorshire - died 1806, . He married a Catherine Stephens born 1753 L.F. died 1824.
Their Daughter Elizabeth Mantle was born about 1772 LF. She married a Thomas Morgans born 1768 L.F. Their children were Thomas (No date) Richard 1798 and John 1800 - 1875. ( There were probably more). Thomas married Elizabeth Mantle on 10 May 1793 LF. Thomas and Elizabeth had a son called Richard Morgans B 1798 and as you know he married a Martha (I don't know her Maiden name) born 1793. I think they lived at Prisg (Prisk) near Beguildy and Yr Irchwyn near Weeg Dolfor.I think that possibly martha died quite young and Richard married again but this is just a possible- i have no proof. Anyway They had a Son called John Morgan (the S has gone) Born 1836 - 1913.  Other children were Elizabeth 1821. Thomas 1826. Mary 1830. Richard 1833.  John my ancestor married Elizabeth Bowen. in Mochdre. The Bowens lived at Digwm Mochdre. Their daughter Mary Elizabeth married William Edward Powell and she is my great Grandma.
I hope this is some help. Let me know if i can tell you any thing more.  Likewise- if you have any other info on Mantles, Stephens or Morgans, please let me know!
All the Best  - Jan

Hello again,
Thankyou for the information, and for letting me know about The Mantles chapter 1 - very interesting!! Sorry to be a bit dim, but the John Stephens c. 1899  who married Rachel Owens -you told me about. Is he related in any way to my Catherine stephens? (married to richard mantle) Also thanks for confirming what i suspected - that Richard Morgans did have a wife after martha named elizabeth. Do you know anything more about her or1st Wife Martha??  I was wondering if my Evan  Mantle (Son of richard Mantle and Catherine stephens) born about 1780 ish could be one and the same as the oldest Evan Mantle on the Mantles chapter 1 list ? i.e the one who married Mary biston. 1800. There are so many Evan Mantles that i get completely confused!
Anyway Thankyou again
Best wishes  - Jan

ruthieB,

Edward is described as "son" in 1901.

Edward Mantle, age 9, is also described as "son" on the 1891 census. Also listed, and again clearly described, is David Davies, age 9, "grandson".
If Edward was Richard's son, he should also be described as "grandson" to indicate relationship to head of household.

There are 2 birth registrations that might be of interest which you may have identified already-
Jun 1880 Edward Mantle   Knighton 11b 149
Dec 1881 Edward Davies Mantle    Knighton 11b 137

However, the legendary reluctance of "Cardies" to put hand in pocket might preclude sending for either or, heaven forfend, both!!!

regards

Fascinating to read these messages (some from people with whom I'm already in contact)  about so many people in my tree. (I'm descended in two ways from Richard Mantle and Catherine Stephens). Like Jan I suspect that the oldest Evan Mantle in 'The Mantle Trail' might be the oldest son of Richard and Catherine, who is mentioned in Richard's will. There is a baptismal record for an illegitimate Evan Stephens, son of Catherine, in Llanbadarn Fynydd in 1772 (R and C married in 1774). No connections (so far!) found between Catherine's family and the Stephens of Mochdre.
The first husband of Mary Morgan(s) (dau of Richard M. and Martha - whose surname I would love to know!)- was Stephen Pugh (Newtown, Civil Marriage, 1849); he died in 1862. Their son William Pugh (b. 1856) helpfully turns up in the 1901 census as the nephew of John Morgan, the son of Richard and Martha. All I know about Richard's second wife is what the 1861 census says (Elizabeth, b. abt 1796, Llanwyddelan).  Hope to learn more!
