Confusion over name of Wife John Steel 1821 Stapleton
« on: Friday 08 August 14 20:52 BST (UK) »
Hello

John Steel was born in 1821 in Stapleton to Jonathan and Margaret Steel

He is found in the 1861 census living in West Derby with his wife and children. His wife is named Elizabeth and his children are Robert, Margaret and Mary

However in the 1871 census, his wife is listed as Charlotte and a daughter named Charlotte in the 1861 census is gone

I cannot seem to find the family in any later censuses, could someone please help clear the confusion? Was the wife Charlotte or Elizabeth?

my thanks

Hi, The 1861 RG09/2733/55/51 has a child Sarah not Mary in addition to Robert, Charlotte & Margaret, John is a Joiner

1851 Census

John Steel 28 occ Wheelwright b Stapleton
Charlotte 26 b Carlisle
Robert 3 b Carlisle
Sarah 1 b Castle Sowerby
Residing at Stonefield Cottage
Census Ref HO107/2426/281/12

Charlotte on the 1861 could simply be elswhere working as a Servant by 1871?

I have double checked and I think his wife was Charlotte, she is in the 1851, 1871 and 1881 census before dying in 1888 in West Derby.

I don't know why she is named as Elizabeth in the 1861 census.

I can't find a marriage that fits, but this looks like Robert's birth. That would give his mother's name and maiden name

Births Mar 1848
Steel    Robert        Carlisle    25   52

Added: this looks like it from FamilySearch - mother Charlotte

Possibly Sept qtr 1846 Carlisle v25 page 33 one to many men to ladies?

I didn't say it was your John STEEL ... I meant it was the John STEEL  who was mentioned as marrying Q3 1846 in Carlisle.
