Kingsdown Orphanage for boys
« on: Monday 11 August 14 21:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace and ancestor Mabel Maud Mulford who may have worked in Kingsdown boys orphanage 29 Pemberton gardens, Islington. She keeps changing names and disappears. One family story she died young but I can find no death certificate, so feel she may have lived on to at least change her name through marriage. Also in my searches it seems she swaps names which makes it even harder to track. So far I have the following:

1878 - birth in Camden, Middlesex under name Mabel Maud Mulford
3/11/1878 - baptised kentish town under name Mabel Maud Mulford
1881 census - at home in islington London under the name Maude M Mulford
1891 census - at home in Islington under name Mabel M Mulford

then she disappears. I have found a May Maud Mulford working in kingsdown boys orphanage in 1911 census, I wondered if May could be short for Mabel (clutching at straws maybe) but there is not much information about the orphanage around to get any information that could corroborate identity. I have discovered there was a girls home too and possible it was all called Mrs Ginever's infants and they took over 29, 35 & 37 Pemberton Gardens. Thats about it. Any help or information would be much appreciated.
In case it helps Mabels parents were John Cavill Mulford & Mary Ann Eleanor Hughes

many thanks

Hi,

Civil Registration she is registered as http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl :-

Mabel Maud MuLLford
Dec Q 1878  Pancras   1b 149

In the 1901 Census have you considered:-

RG13/1002; Folio: 105; Page: 13
Portsmouth Hampshire.

May M M Mulford  born 1880   Servant  Hampstead, London

Have looked for suitable birth for this entry in Civil Reg, but cannot find any.

Is Kingsdown Orphanage the same as Kingsdown House?  Family photo possibly taken in the early 20s shows a group of men on the steps of KH - name is on the two stone pillars by front door.  Presume if so this is in the Lower Holloway area of Islington where family lived.  Any help appreciated.
