More detailed parish records - is there a word for them?
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi! I am just translating something into English. It relates to a series of records produced by the local priest once a year. He was supposed to make a parish census and record in it details about behaviour, church attendance and ownership of religious books etc.
Anyone know what that would be in English?  I seem to recall seeing something similar for an English parish but it was not in my "area" and I can't recall the details. Perhaps it was one of the none-C of E groups?

Until someone comes up with a better term, you could use the word audit.

All the best

The records will be of the Archdeacon's visitation.
A visitation was the periodic visit by the bishop or archdeacon of the diocese to inspect the temporal and spiritual affairs of the parish. Archdeacon's visitations were carried out annually and covered the church fabric, furnishings, services, and an assessment of the conduct of the parochial officers and the moral and religious attitudes of the clergy and parishioners.

Thanks for the replies :) How come I could not think of "audit"?
Would it be correct to call it a visitation when it is the parish priest going to each household? Or is visitation restricted to a church-on-church inspection (if you see what I mean).
What I am translating happened in another country; I just need an English equivalent.

Thanks Stan, but that is the Archdeacon inspecting the local churches. I have the local clergy inspecting his flock.

He could be doing it in preparation for the visitation. The 'visitor' first sent out a Citation Mandate to all the incumbents  in his archdeaconry which obliged them to obtain a copy of the Visitation Articles which listed the subjects into which the Visitor was to inquire.
You say "He was supposed to make a parish census and record in it details about behaviour, church attendance and ownership of religious books etc." Who instructed him to make this?

If it happened in another country, which country. There may not be a English comparison.
