Handwriting help
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 15:40 BST (UK) »
Ok, on the 1871 c I was looking at all Francis Cregan's children I can read
Mary Ann
Michael
Rosina
Francis,  then there is a name for a daughter aged 3, someone has transcribed this as Phebe but I'm not so sure plus I cannot find her birth or any more census records under the name Phebe.
They are living at 5 Leapards st Finsbury.
I need your expertise here

I agree that it may not be Phebe. You would expect the first letter P to look similar to the R of Rosina, but I don't think it does.

However I can't offer any suggestions as to what it could be.  :-\

Someone may be able to enhance it so the letters show up slightly better, but it's very feint ...

I have seen it transcribed elsewhere as Jane. I don't know if that is right. It looks like it may end in 'e' or 'es', and comparing the faded letters where the ink is thicker on some parts of some letters, with others on the page which are slightly more legible, I suppose the first letter could be seen as a Jane.

Have you found the family in the 1881 census and do they have this child living with them?

It looks like Pine which I know it can't be.

What district should the birth be registered?  Checking for Cregan births c1868 might produce a name we can match it to.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos

I've had a go at darkening the image. I can see an 'i' & it looks like the name ends in 's'. Only suitable Cregan birth I can see is Richard in 1867 Q4     St. Luke 1b   713 so shouldn't be him unless it should have been 'son' in relation column  ??? However I can't find this Richard in 1871 or a death for him.

Yes me too can only find a Richard  :-\ and can't see any of them in the next census.

The surname could be mis spelt on the birth registration index for her.

Any baptisms for the children?

The scan on FindMyPast is much clearer [for everyone else  ;D]
and I found a Jane further up the same page.

There are definitely some trailing & upward strokes interfering with the name in question.

I am being persuaded it is Jane!

Looks like he did a sort of squiggle first, then wrote the name.
