Hettie Steel, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth, confusion
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 19:15 BST (UK) »
Hello

This is an entry from the 1891 census, showing my ancestor Jonathan Steel and family

Head   Jonathan Steel   65
Wife   Elizabeth Steel   63
Daughter   Hettie Steel   22

Checking the birth, marriage and death certificates, there is no sign of a Hettie Steel. It could be short for Henrietta, but I cannot find records for a matching person either. Is she an actual daughter or adopted?

my thanks

Where were they in 1891 and what place of birth does the census give for Hettie?
You need to consider other names too, not just Henrietta. She may have been a Harriet or a Hester.

Sounds more than likely, I am surprised that Hettie and Betsy are one and the same person.

Hi Simon,

It is generally better if you keep the information relating to one family on the same thread. You seem to be creating a new thread for each member of the same family when it can be all asked on one.  This was the earlier thread you created today on brother Joseph - son of Jonathan Steel and Elizabeth Kennedy.

I am surprised that Hettie and Betsy are one and the same person.

She appears to be Betcy/Betsy in 1871, and Betsy in 1881.

Possibly her name was written Bettie/Betsie on the 1891 schedule and the enumerator misread that for Hettie.
