BLOXSOME, Oswald (1802-1886)
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 08:48 BST (UK) »
I am a postgraduate research student working on the British artist, Sir Oswald Brierly (1817-1894) who worked in Australia in the 1840s. One of his patrons (and subsequently his life long friend) was Oswald BLOXSOME (1808-1886), who was a very large land owner in New South Wales in the 1840s. He lived in a large house on Sydney Harbour at Mosman known as "The Rangers".  Brierly also stayed at "The Rangers" and painted two important pictures of emigrants arriving at Sydney in the late 1840s.

I am trying to locate these pictures and would welcome contact from anyone researching the Bloxsome family who might be able to assist me.

Thank you.

Good morning and welcome to Rootschat ...
this thread is 5 years old and one statement says
" One of these Bloxsome's was Oswald Bloxsome who had The Rangers in Gloucestershire. He also owned a huge tract of land in NSW called Rangers Valley. He was married to Henrietta Sutherland and his only child also Oswald was married to Isabella Rogers-Harrison."

have a read through all 5 pages - there might be info on it for you
good luck

added - from another thread
Henrietta Sutherland married Oswald Bloxsome in 1825 St Georges Hanover Square, looks like Alexander Sutherland-Graeme may have been one of the witnesses.

you have him b 1808 - he married 1825...so - only 17
Henrietta Sutherland ( who was born in Jamaica )was left £500 in her fathers will 3 years before her marriage  ...so I presume Henriettas family were quite well off ..
did Oswald Bloxsome come from a family with money
17 seems a little young for Oswald to marry ....

ADDED....his MARRIAGE record says Oswald was born 1804 - not 1808 ?
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJWZ-Z3X
where did you get the info he was born 1808 ?

1871 Census Oswald Bloxsome is in Eye, Hersfordshire, living at Berrington Hall.
(Berrington Hall is now a National Trust House)
He is born c 1802 Durley, Gloucestershire (Dursley I presume)
A large Household with 12 Servants, a Governess, and Coachman/Groom/Gamekeeper at a separate residence on the Estate.
Oswald Jnr is Widowed and has 6 Children, 3 girls/3 boys.

So there must be descendants out there!

1861 Oswald/Henrietta are in Adderstone, Northumberland.
Address Adderstone House
4 of their Grandchildren are there, all born Australia.

Trish :)

EDIT;
Quote from a Family Tree;
Bloxsome’s Sydney home, The Rangers at Mosman Bay, was built with convict labour in the early 1840s to the design of the Sydney architect John Frederick Hilly. The dining-room of the house was decorated later in the 1840s by Oswald Brierly with a mural showing HMS Rattlesnake in a storm, but both house and mural have long been destroyed.

Australian newspapers on line (Trove)     trove.nla/gov.au/newspapers/search?adv=y

Cut/paste or key URL and use search key "oswald bloxsome" in "The Phrase" and limit search to "1890-07-05" (in both date boxes).

Returns an item about his paintings being on display - any significance in the address?

He appears to have returned to Australia and died late 1880s

This is for garstonite - you mentioned Henrietta Bloxsome nee Sutherland's father's will leaving her 500 pounds.  I would love to get a copy of that will as I have been researching Henrietta's parents (William Sutherland and Henrietta Fea).  Henrietta had an older sister, first name unknown, who supposedly married someone with the surname of Linley and I've been trying to find out her first name and any other information on her.  I've been researching the Bloxsome's in the hopes that someone in that line might have some information on Henrietta's sister.  Thanks!

For FeaResearcher   why not start your own thread - you say Henrietta had an older sister - it could only have been GRACE EWING SUTHERLAND - but she was christened the same day as Henrietta..
Henrietta Sutherland - 1799 christening 7th May St Thomas in the East ,Jamaica.-siblings were
Grace Ewing Sutherland 1799 christening 7th May St Thomas in the East - could they be twins ? with Grace being born first ??....it is a little problem for you to research
Alexander Dick Sutherland - 1802 christened 8th March in Kingston ,Jamaica https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VH6H-5TQ
Euphemia Sutherland -1804 christened  4th June 1804 St Thomas in the East ,Jamaica
Eliza Sutherland - 1807 christened 16th September St Thomas in the East ,Jamaica
so it looks like Henrietta had ONE brother and Three sisters
www.familysearch.org
surname Sutherland
1780 - 1820
jamaica
parents
William
Sutherland
Henrietta
Fea

search
........................see the records there
 ;)
ADDED- Hmmmmmm   I wonder if Grace WASN'T the child of William and she was born Fea ??
