Yep, here's one with the correct name:

He has a headstone at Bathurst also. I'll send you a transcription shortly.

Thank you for the inscription Merlin.

I so hope in his delirious state that he just fell in while trying to get a bucket of water.

The newspaper article I found said he was a "confectioner", but as Cando pointed out he is of the wrong age to be the John HAWLEY, confectioner I am looking for, so is he related, or am I barking up a gum tree.

Ooooh thinking out aloud please bare with me. the Bathurst cemetery site has John HAWLEY's death as 1886. If this is a typo error and this is the John HAWLEY who fell down the well in 1866. He could well be my JH. 1866 aged 49 gives him a birth date of 1817.

It's a typo error on the website - there are several  ::)  It should be 1866 not 1886.

I have copies of the original transcriptions from years ago. One of OH's rellies was one of the ladies who worked on the project.

Just found some siblings for John & his mother's maiden name.

Merlin, I think you have done it again.

I think he is my JH and the website is wrong.

Family probably arrived in 1852 as Cando found. John became insolvent in Sydney by 1857 (I wonder if he went to Bathurst for a new start) and he was dead by 1866. So after 14 years in the colony what happened to Catherine and Isabella?

At 5 o'clock this afternoon this family was just a few names on a family tree. Thank you to you all, I now have a fuller picture of them.

Some people remain names and dates on my family tree. And then sometimes some of them shout at me to find their story. John HAWLEY is one of those people.
