How did Catherine HAWLEY get to Australia?

Hi Ted there are several articles in the newspaper one mentions the marriage of his niece Isabella Mattison ( adopted daughter ) she was in the 1851 census ...Wonder if this is the Isabella Hawley aged 13 on the 1852 record arriving Victoria on board the vessel Rajahgopaul

Yes I saw the niece Isabella Mattison's wedding too and the 1851 census. Seems the whole family came out.

I wonder if they came out seperately as they could afford too.

Yes I think the Isabella and Catherine on the Great Victoria are probably Catherine and her mother.  I wonder how the others got here?

I steward in our local museum here in Suffolk and we have an old newspaper displayed, open at the appropriate corresponding page to the present week. Every week there are advertisements for Australia. this week I noticed 'Women Domestics: passage paid and GBP 2.00'. There are so many for farm workers, couples - farmworker and domestic/cook, domestics etc. They are all passage paid with guaranteed job plus in many cases one or two pounds spending money!

Quite a few of them are listed via Agencies in local towns and one or two for London Agencies.

According to the indexes at State Records NSW the RAJAHGOPAUL arrived at Moreton Bay, which is in Queensland.  The Colony of Queensland became a separate colony in 1859 so arriving Moreton Bay would be considered to be part of NSW in 1852.

The image of Isabella and Catherine HAWLEY arriving on the GREAT VICTORIA in Melbourne in 1864 shows that they were contracted to land in Sydney.

Oooh Cando the immigration record you found seems closer than mine.

And the insovent court is very interesting too.

I found John's grave - he is buried in Bathurst Cemetery with a death year of 1886. He is the only HAWLEY in the cemetery

Ted I can't see a death reg in 1886 for a John HAWLEY on the NSW bdm.  Probably mistranscribed.

This John born c1839, your John according to the 1851 census born c1818.

Edit...wonder if there is an error with the year of the transcribed record at Bathurst...1886 instead of 1866..would make his year of birth c1817.  Just a thought
