ANN WRIGHT HOPKINSON
« on: Friday 22 August 14 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hello, Could anyone tell me where I can find information about the above lady who is my Great Great Grandmother, she was admitted to the Cheshire Parkside lunatic asylum and died there in 1893.I would like to know (if info does still exist) why she was taken there. by whom and how long she was there.. Her children were Thomas Emmanual Hopkinson and Elizabeth Mc Cormack (nee Hopkinson, her Son in law John is stated on Ann's death certificate. Ann is 'Widow' of James Bowker Hopkinson who went to New York on the ship China in 1873 and as far as we know did not return, if anyone knows what happened to him, did he die there if so of what? and what year or did he just disappear and make a new life for himself. I am really wanting to clear this unsolved mystery... which is quite sad. thanks

Hello Southafrica and welcome to Rootschat,

If you email Cheshire Records Office and give them as much info as possible about Ann they will tell you if they have the record of her time in Parkside/Macclesfield and how to go about ordering it.
You will find the contact details on their web site.

Hello southafrica,

So you will already know that in 1871 Ann was living with her parents and has both Thomas and Elizabeth with her.
RG10 Piece 4009 Folio: 108 Page 37
And in 1881
Ann and her father are living with her brother in law and his family and describing herself as a widow.Thomas is with her but not Elizabeth.
RG11 Piece 4029 Folio 75 Page 19
In 1891 we have Anne Hopkinson 45 widow housekeeper to John Mc Cormack 30 born Ireland and a Surgeons Assistant. Elizabeth Hopkinson 25 year old dressmaker and a boarder.
RG12 Piece 3357 Folio 58 Page 11

I have found a record which I think is a possibility, Ann W Hopkinson in Manchester Rates Books, Poor Rate Assessments it's dated 1892 but the only other info is her address.
It's on the Find my Past web site and if you haven't access you will need to buy a few credits to view the image.

I think James and Ann told a little lie there by saying they were of full age = 21
www.freebmd.org.uk
1843 dec qtr    HOPKINSON James Bowker     Salford 20 764       his birth
1863 dec qtr  Hopkinson James Bowker to Nicholls Ann Wright    Barton 8c 556  his marriage
so he was only just 20 - if indeed he had reached 20....he may of only been 19 if he was born after 10th dec
1845 mar qtr Nicholls Ann Wright   20 895   her birth
1863 dec qtr her marriage ................so she is only 18 ....
I wonder why they said they were full age ??
